Fannish 50 #47: Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells

I love the Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells, and today I just finished listening to the latest (seventh) work in the series, System Collapse. The audiobooks are all narrated by Kevin R. Free, and he does an excellent job. His voice is Murderbot for me, just as Jonathan Cecil is Bertie Wooster and Joan Hickson is Miss Marple.

It's science fiction. I don't read a lot of science fiction but it is proof you can have a compelling story without romance and/or sex being part of it. It's such a...relief. I have written 2 poems about the series.

The series is about a part robot, part human construct designed as a Security Unit (SecUnit). The SecUnit manages to override its governor module, thus enabling it to develop independence, which it primarily uses to watch soap operas. As it spends more time with a series of caring people (both humans and fellow artificial intelligences), it starts developing friendships and emotional connections, which it finds inconvenient.
