My Poem & My Art: A Cubist's Dream of a Jazz Carrot

This was inspired by a line from The Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie. Tuppence's hat looks like 'a cubist's dream of a jazz carrot.' This goes with my Jeeves & Wooster fic Le Rêve.

A Cubist's Dream of a Jazz Carrot (a villanelle)

That electric green and orange parrot
riffs the lift, squared stiff, like he oughtta be
in a cubist’s dream of a jazz carrot.

el-uh-vay-tor just can’t wait or bear it;
flappin’, ball-change-tappin’ most naughti-lee
that electric green and orange parrot!

lindy-hoppin’, to the top then, wear it
down; bone-frame’s fractured, found, most haughti-lee
like a cubist’s dream of a jazz carrot.

stompin’ proud, rompin’ loud, truth-or-dare-it,
he’s a live wire of jive-fire, fraught with glee
that electric green and orange parrot!

off the sticks with his bag o’ tricks, swear it,
hot swing’s got ‘em by the strings, caught ‘n’ free,
in a cubist’s dream of a jazz carrot.

walls throbbin’, cock robin’s bobbin’, swear it
just can’t be, just can’t be, ree-al-uh-tee
that electric green and orange parrot
in a cubist’s dream of a jazz carrot!
