Request: Icon maker instructions

I would like to try my hand at making DW icons (for 3weeks4dreamwidth). Can anyone point me in the direction of a simple (and free) tutorial/instructions/guide/tips on how to do this?

I also want to start making icons! Though I haven't yet. I’m a complete beginner at the moment.

A while ago I bookmarked this comm: icontalking. They have a lot of tutorials, though you have to search through the entries.

I don't have Illustrator or Photoshop (and I believe they are quite expensive) so I plan to use Inkscape or Krita (they’re free).

Oh, this is good. Thank you! I think my challenge will be trying to find instructions which are basic enough for me. I feel like a grandma with her first smart phone.

this is actually something i asked about during the snowflake challenge, and people left a bunch of helpful links/advice in the comments there! also i don't know how likely it is that you'd use it, but i have used the free photo-editing program GIMP for years, so feel free to ask me about that if you like.
