My fic: Moomin: Heights and Depths: Gen

Title: Heights and Depths
Fandom: Mumintroll/Moomins Series - Tove Jansson
Length: 500
Rating: Gen
Character: Moomintroll
For: my Gen Prompt Bingo O-3: Heights and Depths
Notes: Based on Moominvalley Turns Jungle
Summary: Moomintroll swings very high and falls very low.

Moominvalley had turned into a jungle. There were beautiful blooming orchids. And tall stalwart bamboo. Mangos and bananas and all sorts of unknown vegetables were growing. The growth of tropical vegetation was tremendous as well as unprecedented.

At first, Moomintroll was hesitant to balance his round body on a limb high in the tropical canopy, wrap his thick paws around a sturdy vine, and swing from tree to tree.

“I am not used to jumping from tree to tree with liana!” he protested with a plaintive cry. Liana was the woody climbing plant that hung from the jungle trees.

The first few times Moomintroll tried to swing, his aim was horrendous, and he ended up tumbling to the jungle floor.

But with perseverance and practice, Moomintroll improved, and eventually he was reaching his target every time. Then he added grace and a certain finesse to his maneuvers.

Very soon, merely landing on the limb he chose was no longer a challenge. Moomintroll began to test himself. First, he swung farther, and then he swung higher.

And higher. And higher.

Moomintroll swung until he found himself, briefly, fleetingly, rising above the jungle canopy.
And then, with one enormous push, with one gigantic arc, he found himself launching into space!

The blue sky had turned to black. The stars, and the moon, and the sun, loomed large and menacing.

“Oh, no! Oh, wow! Can it be? Will I just float, float, float? Away from Moominvalley? Away from Snufkin and Moominpappa and Moominmamma?”

Moomintroll’s heart grew heavy at this thought, and that heavy heart in the heavy chest made him plummet, out of the firmament, and back down to Moominvalley, or rather, as it was still in that moment in the grips of its tropical transformation, Moominjungle.

Moomintroll fell and fell and fell.

Back through the canopy.

Back through the limbs.

His paws did not catch a single liana to slow his descent.

He fell directly into the river with the loudest splash never recorded in Moominvalley.

But the water did not stop his fall, no.

Moomintroll kept falling until his own bottom struck against the river bottom.

And because Moominvalley had become Moominjungle, Moomintroll encountered the most unusual of river bottom dwellers.

There were large fish with pointy teeth! There were larger fish with whiskers and twitching tales!

Moomintroll popped up to the surface of the water only to find himself face-to-face with a humongous water snake.

Making as few ripples as possible, Moomintroll slipped into a waterlily that was floating on the surface of the river, and he tugged at a few petals until he was wholly concealed.

And thus, he floated along the river current, hidden from view of all and sundry.

Heights and depths were all very well, he thought, as he considered the stars and the river bottom, but he was looking forward to the day when a cold front, a north wind, would approach Moominjungle and wither it, returning it to its tranquil valley state once more.
