And so we come to the end of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes with "The Final Problem" published in November 1893.

Here's the summary:

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson encounter the criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty. Holmes is convinced that Moriarty is the "Napoleon of crime" and is determined to bring him down. After a confrontation with Moriarty, Holmes decides to flee the country with Watson to avoid Moriarty's retaliation. They travel to the Swiss Alps, but are eventually tracked down by Moriarty. In a climactic confrontation at the Reichenbach Falls, Holmes and Moriarty struggle and both fall to their deaths in the raging waters below.

There are many alternate-canon theories about the end of Holmes. They are organized into categories in The Annotated Sherlock Holmes.

1. Moriarty is imaginary. 2. Moriarty is innocent. 3. Moriarty lives. 4. Moriarty lives. 4. Holmes is guilty. 5. Holmes killed the wrong man and 6. Faith of the fundamentalist (Holmes did die and the later resurrected Holmes is an imposter).

The great thing about canon is that you can re-read them many times and always remember or find something new.

And I absolutely love the pool scene of BBC Sherlock, especially borrowing of the banter from canon at the confrontation in 221B between Moriarty and Sherlock and the Moriarty reveal. I thought this was really, really well done. Not so much the resolution in Season 2.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

I made green eggs and ham for the boys. They weren't impressed. I ended up finishing the ham with one of my FAVORITE seasonal treats: Bailey's Irish Cream cake. YUM!

And I am binge listening to audio versions of stories by Irish Le Fanu and did a ficlet for his story "Schalken the Painter."

The language of flowers has always been a good source of inspiration for me. I have traditionally used Kate Greenaway's Language of Flowers from archive.org, but I recently found two books at the library: A Victorian Flower Dictionary by Mandy Kirkby and The Complete Language of Flowers: A Definitive and Illustrated History by S. Theresa Dietz. The first one has short vignettes on 50 flowers and includes references to art, music, and poetry. The second is more comprehensive with very short dictionary-like entries on 1001 flowers. I used the first book to write 4 fills for

Honey has been on my mind because the boys' father prefers it (he eats it on frozen waffles every morning and prefers local honey whenever I'm in a place to buy it, like farmer's markets and produce stand) and the doctor told him he has to cut out sugar to get his A1c down so he was talking about cutting it out. I like it in theory and bees and honey as symbols but I don't eat it.

I don't think I can do better than this collage from last year. I checked my local craft store and these were the bee stickers they had so I'd make the same collage over.

The concept of 'mad honey' caught my attention in a language of flowers book and I read up on it. It's honey and comb made from bees who forage among species of Rhododendron in Turkey. It's been used as a weapon for millennia.

So I wrote a poem and did a triple drabble for

I like tea. I drink Twinings Ceylon Black Orange Pekoe. I also drink ITO matcha and the rare Earl Grey. I have a box of manzanilla (an infusion NOT TEA) because sometimes I get a strange 'bone-cold' and it's the only thing that helps for some reason.

I have used tea as prompt for fic for a long time.

My fourth most popular fic of all time is called Oolong and it's part of a genderswapped BBC Sherlock series called 12 Cups of Tea.

I used tea again as a prompt (and made it murder-y) for my last 2024 GYWO Yahtzee fill and for my Intoabar fic.

I need a hardboiled detective icon!

I love hardboiled detectives. My favorite is Phillip Marlowe by Raymond Chandler. Every once and a while I like to write a private investigator AU. I posted one today for Unconventional Courtship. [I finished it! at 3:15 am this morning! I so afraid the mice were going to come out but none did.]

I watched a lot of noir/hardboiled detective films for this, and I did a chapter by chapter analysis of Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely, while listening to an audiobook version by narrated Elliott Gould who does the weariness and wit very well. It includes one of my favorite lines from all of literature:

he looked about as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food

And, of course, I did a collage. I ordered this old Hollywood B detective movie stickers from etsy. They are so cool.
