Fannish 50: 2024: Everything is Murder edition: #11: Hokaku and shin honkaku

I enjoy reading translations of Japanese detective fiction into English, both modern works and older works. Hokaku is usually translated as 'fair play,' meaning the kind of story where all the clues are laid out and it is possible for the reader to solve the mystery. This style is the classic style and 'shin honkaku' or 'new fair play' is the modern revisiting of this classic style. I don't often get excited about new books and I'm hardly ever tempted to pre-order but I am tempted by the new release of the translation of Seishi Yokomizo's The Little Sparrow Murders, which is supposed to be out at the end of this month (April).

I tried my hand at a tanka inspired by the shin honkaku novel The Mill House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji (which I talked about in the book bingo).

rubber face distorts
while waterwheel churns
in gristly measure

after the storm, lust's blind greed
unmasked and re-membered
