Joe’s eyes sprang open and he pushed himself up to stand in one smooth move. Normally slow to wake, the knowledge that Nicky was missing from their bed was enough to catapult him into immediate full alertness. Where was he?

Peeking around the edge of the doorframe, Joe scanned the area. Nicky stood completely naked in front of the open pantry, gun held in a firm, sure grip. Joe came to stand next to him.

Sure enough, Nicky’s eyes were wide open but slightly glazed, his usually intense focus dulled by sleep.
