The language of flowers has always been a good source of inspiration for me. I have traditionally used Kate Greenaway's Language of Flowers from archive.org, but I recently found two books at the library: A Victorian Flower Dictionary by Mandy Kirkby and The Complete Language of Flowers: A Definitive and Illustrated History by S. Theresa Dietz. The first one has short vignettes on 50 flowers and includes references to art, music, and poetry. The second is more comprehensive with very short dictionary-like entries on 1001 flowers. I used the first book to write 4 fills for [community profile] vocab_drabbles. Here are 2 of the Miss Marple ones. And here are two more Sherlock Holmes (ACD) ones.

I like tea. I drink Twinings Ceylon Black Orange Pekoe. I also drink ITO matcha and the rare Earl Grey. I have a box of manzanilla (an infusion NOT TEA) because sometimes I get a strange 'bone-cold' and it's the only thing that helps for some reason.

I have used tea as prompt for fic for a long time.

My fourth most popular fic of all time is called Oolong and it's part of a genderswapped BBC Sherlock series called 12 Cups of Tea.

I used tea again as a prompt (and made it murder-y) for my last 2024 GYWO Yahtzee fill and for my Intoabar fic.

I love Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. And it's not difficult to make fannish things related to her and murder.

Four of the five fills I did for my Roll #1 GYWO Yahtzee were Miss Marple + murder.

Miss Marple talking to a young boy about a dog (and a murder).

Miss Marple & Dolly Bantry looking for clues to a young woman's death in her bedsit before the police arrive.

Miss Marple showing her inner Sherlock Holmes fan when she's summoned to a solicitor's office.

Miss Marple on Spanish holiday (and there's a murder).

I also did a collage. The photo is terrible. I couldn't scan it properly because of the large embellishment (the skull under glass). And the book is so thick now it won't lie down properly. But it's a really beautiful collage in real life. We have poison bottle, maze, and skull to represent the wickedness Miss Marple regularly confronts!

Also, because it's poetry month, I did a poem that doesn't seem like a fannish poem until you get to the end.

…arresting scent of lemon zest
and curd from sunny flower-shaped treats…
...dusted with sugary stars lest
confections prove too tart to eats…
…set there, on the plate, giving pause,
and, thus, without probable cause…
…hundreds and thousands [quiet cough]
…hundreds and thousands…scraped right off…

The last two lines refer to the first story in The Thirteen Problems collection of Miss Marple short stories.

I often use the Victorian language of flowers in ficlets, and the resource I use is Kate Greenaway's The Language of Flowers [1884].

I did four ficlets and four collages for four flowers.

Two for [community profile] vocab_drabbles in Sherlock Holmes (ACD): Hibiscus means 'delicate beauty' and Red poppies mean 'consolation.' And two for [community profile] sweetandshort in the Miss Marple fandom: Water lily means 'purity of heart' and Camellia means 'perfected loveliness.

My #4 Prompts

You have learned much about yourself. Take some time to reflect.

THE TOWER
You seek out conversation with someone. Who do you reach out to? What do you want to discuss?

THE HERMIT
You realize you are crying. Why?

THE HIGH PRIESTESS
You decide to seek company. How do you go about this?

ACT 5 --
Your past my shape your experiences, your thoughts, your desires, but it does not define you. You are in control of your own path. The road ahead may be built from the stones that you've gathered, but these fragments of your past do not dictate where it leads. It is time to move forward.

Choose one of the Major Arcana to represent your present self. Do not draw from the deck. Choose freely among the card. You are in charge of your own identity.

Who are you? What do you do next?

The Major Arcana I picked for my three characters were: 1. The Tower 2. The World 3. The Magician
