Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

I made green eggs and ham for the boys. They weren't impressed. I ended up finishing the ham with one of my FAVORITE seasonal treats: Bailey's Irish Cream cake. YUM!

I also did a collage.

And I am binge listening to audio versions of stories by Irish Le Fanu and did a ficlet for his story "Schalken the Painter."

I tried a new recipe from the grocery story magazine. Cookie Butter Bars.

It uses Biscoff Creamy Cookie Butter which is a spread made from those cinnamon cookies you used to get on Delta flights. Minor doesn't like chocolate and is allergic to tree nuts so it's a dessert bar that doesn't have either.

They are soft. Sort of like a cross between soft fudge and brownie texture.

This was an impulse buy for the fun of it in the grocery store. It was too expensive for 6 donuts, but I had to see what a Grinch donut tasted like. So the Grinch head is filled with a grey-colored cream (maybe chocolate? I really couldn't tell) and the belly is full of a white cream. The Cindy Lou Who donut has berry flavored icing. The rest of them are chocolate glazed with sprinkles.

We took the boys to the county fair today and I came home with deep fried Oreos and funnel cake!

stonepicnicking_okapi: Sherlock Holmes (holmes)
Today (6 January) is celebrated as Sherlock Holmes birthday! It is also Epiphany in the Christian calendar and every year I make an epiphany tart (a jam tart) to celebrate. I've been doing it for many years. And this year is no exception.

This year's jams are mango-peach (centre); strawberry (points); and blueberry (outer edges). The boys' father has already dug into it and pronounced it good.

Also, I wrote a short ficlet.

The boys and their father made a gingerbread soccer stadium from a kit. Also I made a coffee shortbread from a recipe of [personal profile] spiralicious and decorated them to give to a neighbour who gave us sweets at Xmas.

Candy Day!

It's candy day!

I don't really need a reason to eat candy but I'll take it. My favorite candy falls into two categories: chocolate and gummys. I like all kinds of chocolate and I like gummy bears and peach gummy rings and watermelon gummys.

What is your favorite candy?

Today is Sandwich Day! I got a blt at the overpriced, very slow bistro today to observe the day.

What is your favorite kind of sandwich?

Mine are or have been:

1. peanut butter and potato chip (I ate these as a child)
2. smoked trout on baguette (there was a cafe near my undergraduate college which served this)
3. tomato on toast with or without a fried egg (I ate these in the Peace Corps)
4. tuna sub (just lettuce and tuna prepared outside tastes bizarrely better than tuna made at home--a mystery I have yet to solve)
5. blt with or without avocado (today I had it with avocado)

Happy Day of the Dead. I found these cookies in the grocery store yesterday. The good thing is that they are Lofthouse brand and made tree-nut free facility and Minor has a tree nut allergy so it's worth the few extra bucks to have baked goods that don't require an epi-pen.

Also I love, love, love the Day of the Dead opening of the James bond film SPECTRE. It's one of my favorites.

Today (15 Oct) is Mushroom Day.

I may try to get a pizza with mushrooms on it for dinner. I like stuffed mushrooms ut I haven't had them in decades and I don't even know where I would get them at this point.

Do you like mushrooms? How do you eat them?

Today (14 October) is Dessert Day!

I made perfectly pumpkin cupcakes (from a mix called Perfectly Pumpkin with matching cream cheese icing) and while they are fine cupcakes, they don't really taste like pumpkin at all!

So, that's that.

What is your favorite dessert?
stonepicnicking_okapi: lemons (lemons)
It's lemon juice day. I use this powder in packets in my yerba mate tea and it makes the tea taste much better. I have tried the liquid lemon juice but I find the lemon flavour of these crystals stronger and I like it more. No sugar, no artificial sweetners.

It wasn't too difficult a decision observe this holiday.

[personal profile] sixbeforelunch mentioned chili and cornbread the other day, and that got me thinking about autumn foods. So, I broke out the candy corn last night and I tried this pumpkin spice yogurt. I will not buy the yogurt again but it was okay. If it's autumn where you are, feel free to share some things you like to eat at this time of year.

I made a miniature felt strawberry and a cupcake for Minor's birthday which was at the end of April.

Thank you!

Yesterday was a nice day. There were well wishes and two lovely ficlets, [personal profile] smallhobbit who wrote about Ferret and Bertie Wooster dancing and singing in Party 't the Savoy and [personal profile] scfrankles inviting some of my favourite literary characters to share a soiree in The Sincerest Form of Flattery. Lovely cards, in envelopes and electronic. A new book and some nice chocolate. I worked on a puzzle and watched Midsomer Murders and read. I finished The Gentle Art of Fortune-Hunting by K. J. Charles. I watched part of the newer Aladdin film and puzzled over Marwan Kenzari's accent. And I didn't have to cook dinner or prepare the boys' lunches. And I made myself a miniature felt pear.

And Minisculus and his father made cupcakes. I picked out the icing and sprinkles.

stonepicnicking_okapi: tree of lfe (Treeoflife)
I've been working on more miniature felt food.

Every year I make an Epiphany tart (jam tart) for 6 Jan, the birthday of Sherlock Holmes. This year's jams were pineapple-passion fruit, lemon curd, orange marmalade with champagne, and strawberry. There was mango, too but I couldn't get the jar open.

Also, look at this silly cover. Note: I haven't read the book yet so don't spoil me if you have.
