Challenge #15

Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.

Short answer: fannish crafting & gifting

Long answer:

In thinking back on the year and trying to come up with an answer to this challenge, I had the unexpected realization that true joy for me comes when I physically make something for someone else (related to fandom). I got the most satisfaction last year from assembling treat bags for people attending the SUGA movie (more probably than the actual movie itself. I think the first movie was better, less editing and making him look less glossy [pun intended, Yoongi, which is SUGA's real first name means 'gloss' in Korean]). I also got joy from making junk journals for my DW friends. In the first case, it was a fandom I don't share with [personal profile] smallhobbit [Sir Matthew Bourne dance productions] but I know that she enjoys it very much and there's very little fannish items available so making that, gathering supplies, curating and arranging things, and assembling gave me a lot of joy. One part of the junk journal I made for [personal profile] debriswoman was about detectives, so the fandom interest overlapped with mine, also one part of the advent calendar for [personal profile] bethctg was Jin of BTS, which is another overlap [but it isn't physically possibly for me to love Jin as much as she does :)] but I also included items for books she likes which I don't have fannish interest in (e.g., Stephen King's IT and the Ramona books by Beverly Clearly) so it doesn't really matter if it is MY fandom but I really like making things physically that are fannish. The items are all appreciated but the joy is not contingent on that. There is joy in actually putting them together and thinking it through. So a few photos of the treat bags and the junk journals in the cut.

Interact with someone in fandom you haven't talked with before.

I just posted in a new comm [community profile] kindreadspirits:

This is a chat and fanworks community centred around making the most of the gay subtext abundant in a lot of vintage horror and classic ghost stories, namely of the Victorian through the Edwardian era and towards the middle of the 20th Century.

I posted my ficlet from 2019 set in MR James' "Casting the Runes."

Challenge #11

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.

I picked 'writing on the body.' I think it's a trope/device which can express a lot of emotions. I wrote ficlets in four different fandoms: Carmilla, BTS, Sherlock Holmes (ACD), and Venom.

1. It's cold! It's 9 degrees F (-12 Celsius). I paid bills yesterday and my electricity bill is so high! I turned down the thermostat but of course now I am freezing. Apartments are drafty and you can't do anything about it. We got 4 inches of snow on Sunday and another half an inch yesterday. Yesterday was a holiday (MLK Jr Day) but school was cancelled today because the temperatures dropped so, that everything was very icy, and even though they cleared everything yesterday, it re-froze last night. I threw the boys outside for 30 minutes today before lunch and they told me not to go out because most of the world is very icy and they know I am afraid of ice. To be fair, I tend to slip a lot when I have to walk on it (more than normal people--maybe it's the way I walk?) and I have had a couple bad falls where I cracked my head. I am debating whether to even do my shopping run tomorrow because I'm just too scared.

2. I can't imagine that I am going to feel anything but anxious for the next 4 years.

3. I forced Minor to go down the hill with me to the liquor store on Saturday and bought 2 mini-bottles of 100 proof vodka and mixed one of my essential oils (sweet orange) into a 1-ounce spray bottle. The boys say it smells like orange juice, but it makes me happy. That was project #1. Project #2 was changing ink in the new printer. It was the first time I'd done it. It was easy but the illustrations were not exactly helpful. Project #3, this week's project, is hemming two pairs of pants. I have never hemmed pants before, and I don't own a sewing machine, so we'll see.

4. I have a sore in my left arm pit which, of course, I think is a fatal ticking-time-bomb tumor.

5. I hate being scared of life. Puzzle therapy is helping. So is listening to Classic Ghost Stories podcast. I love the guy who does it. His name is Tony Walker and he reads a story, then talks about the author and the story and then sometimes he just natters on about his life and I find him very funny. He's the only creator I am tempted to support financially (like Patreon or similar) because I just like him so much.

https://www.youtube.com/@ClassicGhost

6. The price of groceries is going up significantly and I feel like I should be more of a frugal mindset. Youtube algorithm has started throwing me videos like 'Feed your Family on X $ a week/month' but they do not have Picky Minisculus.

7. Putting the phone in the kitchen before bed is now The Habit. New habit to try: not eating in front of any screen (including phone). Hmmm. A tougher nut to crack for me, except at dinner.

I am doing exercise, I am meditating, I am doing yoga, I am doing housework and collaging and ficcing and reading but...sigh. It is difficult to get calm or remain calm. Everything is probably not going to be okay, in fact.

Challenge #10

In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts.

So, I am re-wording this as 'In your own space, talk about one of your fannish firsts.'

I have stated before that I did not understand the concept of fandom in the sense of a group of people who are interested in one phenomenon (piece of media or literature) and make and share transformative works about that phenomenon until I was 36. My interest in fandom then began as a celebrity crush on Benedict Cumberbatch based on his performance in the BBC Sherlock TV series but Cumberbatch was not my first celebrity crush.

My first celebrity crush was about 25 years earlier, maybe around the age of 9 or 10 or 11, and it was a boy named Alasdair Gillis who performed in a kids' sketch show called "You Can't Do that on Television." Originally created in Canada, it was picked up by Nickelodeon in the early days of cable TV. It was full of gross kid humor. There was a diner, and a nasty cook named Bart served up hamburger with boogers in them. And if one of the performers said 'I don't know' green slime would come down on them suddenly.

I wrote my first fan letter to him and received an autographed glossy photo in return. And that was that until Cumberbatch many, many years later. I can't remember liking any celebrity between the two.

Challenge #9

In your own space, create a fanwork.

This is my Sherlock Sunday entry #2 for 2025.

The Sign of Four is the second of four Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Interesting fact: Oscar Wilde and Doyle attended a party in 1899 sponsored by Lippincott Publishing and both ended up with book deals by the end of it. The Wilde book was The Picture of Dorian Grey and Doyle's was The Sign of Four

I listened to an audiobook version of The Sign of Four with David Timson as narrator who does a solid job. And I made a collage. (a physical collage made with sticker and paper in a notebook and scanned).

The Sign of Four is where Watson gets a wife and we see Holmes' cocaine addiction. We meet the Baker Street Irregulars and a certain dog named...?

The dog in the collage is the only dog sticker I had. He doesn't look like that in the book! I included 6 pearls for the ones Mary receives from an anonymous benefactor and a map of the Andaman Islands. It's unlikely that kind of shaped bottle would hold cocaine but the other ones were less likely.

One of the best parts of The Sign of Four is that we get the Watch deduction which BBC Sherlock riffed on in the first episode of that series. And the scene in the cab of Sherlock explaining the clues from John's phone has to be one of my very favorite scenes in all of fandom.

And a drabble I did inspired by the phrase 'neat Moroccan case' which we get in The Sign of Four

Title: Neat Moroccan case
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Rating: Gen
Length: 100
Prompt: confused
Notes: Angst. set during Hiatus (when Holmes is 'dead')
Summary: Watson tries to find a cause for his bad mood.

Challenge #8

In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for a beloved character, relationship or fandom.

This last one is the one I usually submit for this question: the idea that Holmes & Watson retire together. Even as recent as yesterday, I was reminding one of my beloved readers that it is NOT canon. Watson comes back for His Last Bow but The Lion's Mane makes it clear that he isn't a part of Holmes' retirement. And we hates that, don't we?

But let's talk about a few other fandoms.

1. And then there were none. the book by Agatha Christie. I love Vera Claythorne and Phillip Lombard. They are deeply flawed characters, but I hope they get some satisfaction in the afterlife.

2. Venom. In the second film (Let there be Carnage) there is a throw-away comment by Venom that Venom and Eddie should be a detective duo. I love that head canon.

3. BTS. It will be very interesting to see what kind of music they put out when they get back together after everyone finishes their military service. They have evolved in their solo careers into artists with fairly distinct styles and it will be interesting to see if they can recapture the synergistic magic of OT7.

Challenge #7

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a wishlist of sorts.

This really isn't my cup of tea, but here goes.

Icons

1. A cleaning/decluttering/housework icon

2. A Watson icon [Burke or Hardwicke of Granada, Paget's illustrations of the original stories, text of the original stories, Martin Freeman]

3. BTS icon [OT7 or Jimin, especially pink-haired Jimin, SUGA, especially mint-haired SUGA or Agust D, Jin or Jungkook]

Crafting

If anyone has washi tape or stickers or any vintage ephemera they wish to part with, I'd be more than happy to take them :)

Recommendations

1. Coffee. I want to switch to a fair trade coffee (ground not whole beans) but I am having difficulty finding a brand which is to my taste (available in stores or at least to be shipped to the US). To be honest, I like Dunkin Donuts coffee the best. Medium roast, not too bitter, not too light. I am going to try Equal Exchange, but brands at my organic store either overwhelm me or just don't seem to be something I would drink or are very pricey.

Challenge #6

Share your favourite piece of original canon.

I am going to attempt to start a Sunday Sherlock tradition (doing a post about Sherlock Holmes on Sundays).

Mug

So have a moodboard or two. And a favorite piece of Sherlock Holmes canon (meaning the original novels and short stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle) is that there are a lot of Violets in it.

A collage or two (Holmes themed & Watson themed):

And the nice thing about Holmes canon is that there's always something new to learn. For example, I did not know that ACD was paid 25 pounds for A Study in Scarlet and that in the novel reprint in 1888 included drawings by ACD's father, Charles Doyle. Here's one of them:

Challenge #5

Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

1. Friendships. Fandom friends are all my friends except for the members of my meditation circle. That's it. I exchange messages with fandom friends every day, and some of the friendships are of many years. For example, all but 2 (my sister and a former co-worker) of the Christmas cards I received were from DW friends all of whom I have never met.

2. Poetry. Because of my participation in the LiveJournal Sherlock 60 comm, I rediscovered poetry and began writing it and that has enriched my life greatly.

3. Fandom made me queer. It did! I found fandom in my mid-30's and before that, I thought about the world differently and reacted to the world differently. I feel like as my interest in fandom has grown other parts of my interior life have shrunk to very small defined boxes or disappeared entirely. What I appreciate has changed. Yes, it's getting older and being a mother and not have a job or a career or really an identity for 10+ years, but I still think if I had followed this path without fandom, I would not be queer. And my degree of mental illness and sheer miserableness would be very great.

Challenge #3

In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.

These days, I think of my AO3 account as an archive for personal use which I allow the internets to peer onto. I don't think of posting stories there as the same as publishing them, so I am less upset about typos or hate/bot comments or something being beta'd which did bother me when I first started posting stories.

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story.

In the summer of 2011, I was on maternity leave with my first son. I was 36 years old, and I watched BBC Sherlock. The first episode blew me away. I didn't believe TV could be clever. Up until then, I had never shipped any fictional characters. I didn't have any idea of transformative works. From BBC Sherlock, I got a celebrity crush on Cumberbatch which led to reading fanfic on AO3 which led to writing fanfic on AO3 in December 2013. That led back to Sherlock Holmes canon and comms on LiveJournal and then here and other fandoms. And shipping. And a redefinition of myself. And 3 million words on AO3 later, here I am.

In August of 2021, I was trying to find something from the BBC on Youtube and accidentally clicked on BTS' BBC Radio One performance cover of Missing You, then their performance of Permission to Dance. What is going on with that one?! [That one is Park Jimin] They look like they're having fun. Forty-eight hours later, after much staring and many swats to my ego, I could tell the seven apart and was dropped down the rabbit hole which is ARMY life.

I like the snow-on-the-beach banner so that's what we're going with this year.

Challenge #1

Update your fandom information.

I didn't think I'd have anything to update, but I did. I made BTS more prominent, it really is my active fandom in the sense the only one I actively search out fanfic to read, so I put all the boys in the interest tags, not just SUGA/Agust D, and I deleted all the Good Omens tags in the interest section.

I did, in fact, write two Good Omens drabbles for [community profile] adventdrabbles, but I am not going to write any more longer fic in that fandom. I never made it past Season 1 of the TV show anyway, and I donated my copy of Good Omens over the winter break becasue I don't need 'canon' anymore. I still love Crowley, but not enough to invest any deliberate time or energy into him.

Everything else was copacetic.

Bonus questions:

Your fandom personality in 2023 was: (i.e. Fandom Eeyore, Twitter Refugee, Discord Party Animal, etc.)

I wish they'd given a poll or something. I have no idea what my fandom personality is.

In 2023, you discovered: (that you adore hockey RPF, but you hate the Liberty Mutual emu, etc.)

I am grateful for sane online relationships with people who share similar interests and are fans of the same things. We have good days and bad days, days where we are communicative and days when we forget to communicate or life crowds out the online connection, but for the most part, we are good people and good friends. I developed this relationship/friendship with another ARMY in the chatroom of the BTS game which was not based in reality. It was disturbing and pushed buttons and I said things I didn't mean and got twisted. I guess it was toxic, but I am not sure I'm using that term correctly. I wrote them a fic (as I often do) to very specific criteria that I would not usually do (V-centric, gen, no slash, based in Iraqi culture and poetry, which I studied to try to be respectful of) and they never even bothered to read it. And that was the last straw and I ghosted them. I have been back to the plaza twice in 2024 during different times of day (not when I would meet them) and it's okay but for the most part, I am staying away. It was just weird and unhealthy and not good for standing grounded in reality. And it was a warning but also made me even more appreciative of the sane relationships I have with fellow fans.

Your fandom home in 2023 was: (Bluesky, Mastodon, Middle Earth, lying in my bed, with a good book, etc.)

Dreamwidth, AO3, and email exchanges with online friends.

Challenge #14

Try something new.

1. I tried 2 new recipes. I sat down with my sons and we flipped through the grocery store magazine and picked out two. So they were sloppy joe grilled cheese and bananas foster. And they liked both.

2. I've just started trying to maintain a regular yoga practice, and I've only been doing Yoga with Adriene every other day. She's the only yogi I've tried. Snowflake mod [personal profile] tjs_whatnot recommended this yogi: Yogi Bryan and I did this 30 minute video of him and liked it: 30 minute yoga for a good day.

3. I got my son to pick out a 'Blind Date with a Book' book at the public library and I ended up with something I never would've picked out for myself: My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows and I just finished the prologue and Chapter 1. And it's good. Definitely not my usual fare, but I think I might finish it! Summary:

Prepare for an adventure of Gothic proportions, in which all is not as it seems, a certain gentleman is hiding more than skeletons in his closets, and one orphan Jane Eyre, aspiring author Charlotte Brontë, and supernatural investigator Alexander Blackwood are about to be drawn together on the most epic ghost hunt this side of Wuthering Heights.

So 3 things make a post!

Challenge #13

Make a rec list of fanworks!

This was difficult because unless you are my friend, I only read BTS fic. BTS is the only fandom I browse. And I mostly read WIPs and unfortunately, many of the WIPs are abandoned and/or update REALLY slowly. On principal, I'm not going to rec anything that's not complete. And frankly I also have a tendency to fall in love with fics and then something happens about 2/3rds of the way in it, and it just loses its flavor in the last chapter(s). So I get disappointed a lot. Nevertheless, I am going to try. All are explicit. Many are Omegaverse.

BTS Rec List

1. Gentle (51160 words) by Endlesswaltz8

Omegaverse. Explicit. Jungkook is the Alpha next door to Omegas Yoongi, Jimin, and Taehyung. I like Endless Waltz's style. I like the other 2 BTS fics they've written. I even have a draft of a Jimin/Namjoon fic set in an AU of theirs. But they only write Stray Kids now. When I can't find anything else to read, I re-read this.

2. Set Me Free (13122 words) by yoonkisses

Canon universe. Explicit. Jimin/Jungkook smut. I like yoonkisses' style too. They do yearning/pining/uncertainty very well. I actually prefer their Yoongi/Jungkook/Jimin one, but this is good too.

3. I Stand Here Again, Waiting (17021 words) by deepslowpanic
Deepslowpanic has a nice style. Jungkook/Yoongi This is an AU where Yoongi is an astronaut long ago thought dead and Jungkook is mission control who hears his desperate signal. Very poignant. Very touching. I got a bit weepy at the end. There's parallel masturbation over the intercom (that's why it's explicit).

4. give your trust to me (7835 words) by pearlmimi

I like pearlmimi's smut style, but it is FILTHY with a captial F and it's Jungkook as a dog hybrid. This is just Jimin/Jungkook. (Jimin is human) but there's another one by them which is filthier with Dog hybrid!Jungkook/his owner Namjoon/therapist Jimin. Definitely dead dove elements for the 'therapy' aspects of it which are pervy to the hilt and bestiality.

5. Learning The Language Of Love (113306 words) by infinitetwinkles

Omegaverse. Explicit Alpha Jungkook/Omega Jimin. Jungkook is the pack alpha. They can't understand each other at first.

6. Hurricane in Paradise (96691 words) by annie_vi

I actually learned some things about deaf culture from this fic! Explicit. AU It's Jimin/Jungkook. Jungkook is deaf. Jimin is a chiropractor. There are side ships NamJin and Taegi and Taehyung is deaf and autistic. The NamJin is cute because Jin owns a cat cafe. She also has a Christmas Jimin/Jungkook AU which is fun.

7. Sweet Cream (124306 words) by JoonieJuly

More animal hybrid filth. OT7. This time Jin is a farmer (?) and Namjoon is a hired help and everyone else is cow, dog, rabbit, and a pair of kittens. All the kinks. All the smuts. Very messy.

8. i'll be your medicine and more (3287 words) by jikookfilth

Jimin/Taehyung/Jin. Nasty Omegaverse filth. Explicit. Jimin is pregnant and lactating and Jin and Taehyung are doctor and nurse. I think even calling this med kink is a bit high-falutin' compared to what I used to read in the BBC Sherlock which (often but not always, of course) had more psychology to it. It's just smut.

9. Hot, Sticky Sweet (24976 words) by spookyjkk

This is a 'check myself into a heat center' fic. Jungkook is an Omega and Jimin is a staff Omega and they fall in love.

Now, I'm embarrassed but I did it!

Challenge #12

Tell Us about a Personal Win.

Yesterday I took a hike!

Even though there are tons of things I should have been doing, yesterday I took some time to be in Nature with a capital N. I haven't been hiking in decades but I used to do it a lot when I lived overseas. So I found a state park with a scenic bridge (I'd never been there) and put my sons' father on emergency contact duty (no cell phone service!) and drove out there and spent about a hour crossing streams and skittering across wobbly rocks.

It's a win because I made time for it and did it and survived it even though my balance and fearlessness aren't what they once were.

Pics or it didn't happen.
