A summer sky, a canopy of leaves a-teem.
Beneath the green, I pace the steps and wait for you.
A summer sigh, a lazy bougainvillea dream.
The mid-morn sun sets midnight’s dew, the world, a-steam,
You fritter at your tea and toast. My eyes look to
a summer sky, a canopy of leaves a-teem.
Magenta tongues a-waggle, flecks of white a-gleam,
my love’s about to blossom as the song birds coo
a summer sigh, a lazy bougainvillea dream.
At perfumed noon, the steps, though once a bright-swept cream,
are ruddy with impatience; humours, hues imbue
a summer sky, a canopy of leaves a-teem.
The day drags on; my thoughts of you split at the seam
and drip like ripened fruit while languid bees tattoo
a summer sigh, a lazy bougainvillea dream.
Sweet butterflies sip, flit their sweet good nights. They seem
quite wise. And so, I, too, decide to bid adieu
to summer sky, to canopy of leaves a-teem,
to summer sigh, to lazy bougainvillea dream.
