April is National Poetry Month in the US so I'll be posting poems I like and a bit of my own verse. I hope to post something every day so if it's not your cup of tea or gets to be too much, feel free to un-follow or un-friend.

Since it's also April Fool's Day, I thought I'd start with a funny one. I love this because the rhyme (hiccup!) is so tight!

A Drink with Something in It by Ogden Nash.

There is something about a Martini,
A tingle remarkably pleasant;
A yellow, a mellow Martini;
I wish I had one at present.
There is something about a Martini,
Ere the dining and dancing begin,
And to tell you the truth,
It is not the vermouth—
I think that perhaps it's the gin.

Title: Ambitious
Fandom: Faust [Goethe]
Form: Terza rima
Rating: Gen
Length 100
No. of lines: 14
Prompt: Ambitious

In Gothic chamber sits ambitious Faust,
a scholar, apt, but restless, ill at ease;
he spars with Life in wild, pernicious joust

until he calls up Mephistopheles.
A bargain’s driven home. A pact is signed.
They set about, a pair of circus fleas,

performing tricks and sucking blood divined.
When draught from witch’s pot is drained,
the learned Doctor finds his soul consigned

to beastly woo. He leaves poor Gretchen chained
to darkness, lunacy, dishonour, strife,
and then advances down a path most pained.

At last, Faust winnows wheat from chaff most rife:
his striving wins salvation, not his life.
