Interesting times: Preparations
Mar. 13th, 2020 10:56 amMinor's school has been canceled for 2 weeks beginning Monday. All his soccer related events (practices, games, and tournaments) are cancelled (for now) until mid-April. There have already been reports about bullying of Chinese students in Minor's elementary school. I have talked to him about it. I am not concerned about the virus but rather the effect that all these responses are having on people. There are going to be stations where kids can pick up lunches around the county (but of course that's predicated on having someone to take you to those stations). There are many things that keep me up at night (climate change; how many rapists are in the White House, Congress, and on the Supreme Court; racist cops; kids in cages; who killed Epstein and who he was protecting) but this virus isn't one of them.
Nevertheless, I was on the road with Minisculus at 7:15 am this morning. We went to Target (an all goods store), grocery store, craft store, book store, gas station, ATM (cash point) and liquor store. He was a trooper (but he got A LOT of treats, too, so don't feel too bad for him!). A lot of anxiety buying (puzzles! candy!) and just whatever buying (a pot roast! a mini bottle of Jameson for Irish coffees for Saint Patrick's Day!). There was no hand sanitizer to be had (you had to have been in line at the Target when they opened at 7 and the cashier said they sold out in about 20 seconds). I did snag one of the last 7 packs of toilet paper but they had plenty of paper towels and soap. They were limiting you to 4 per customer (much to the chagrin of the lady who was buying about 20 packs of wet wipes behind me). I don't use a lot of hand sanitizer, just when I'm out with the boys. I prefer to wash my hands the old fashioned way.
My anxiety level is very high, but the boys' father isn't traveling, mostly because he's afraid the US won't let him back in when he'll want to return (he is a citizen by marriage but he would be traveling to Niger, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon, and all the flights go through Europe, mostly Paris, a few Amsterdam). And he says some of the African countries are instituting their own mandatory 14 day quarantine which would defeat the purpose of him going there to work. He works from home on Wednesdays but I don't know if he'll be doing more of it.
