A bird returned from journey long and far
to perch upon a barren limb and sing
of turquoise sky without a cloud to mar
through which it’d flown to herald desert spring.
A second bird alit to rest its wings.
It warbled proud of all that it had seen,
of turquoise sea, the brilliance that it flings
upon the world to shine when shadows teem.
The dull brown earth attended every note
of glad duet, then dozed beneath the two
and dreamt strange dreams, as if by ancient rote,
of turquoise sky, of turquoise sea, of blue.
And when it woke, a thousand years alone,
it found its dreams had wrought a turquoise stone.
