I ruffled the morning newspaper.
“Yes?” prompted Holmes.
“This,” I showed him, “the red-headed league has disbanded. I wonder what it means.”
“Curious,” agreed Holmes. Then his eyebrows shot up.
“What?” I asked.
“Red-headed men?”
“I suppose so.”
“Do you remember last night’s pudding?”
“How could I forget? It was Mrs. Hudson’s exquisite gingerbread cake. One of the delicacies of the season. Spiced and sweet and rich.”
“You asked her for the recipe.”
“She demurred, of course.”
“She said the secret ingredient was hand-ground gingers.”
“Oh dear.”
“Yes, curious that plural.”
We both cast thoughtful, anxious glances at the newspaper.
