It wasn’t Yusuf’s first snow.

Nicolò reached to touch the falling flakes, his mouth open, his face lit with child-like delight.

Yusuf had never seen his traveling companion so animated.

“Will there be lots, Yusuf?”

“It’s likely.”

“Sunlight on snow is as dazzling as your smile.”

Yusuf stared. Nicolò, noticing Yusuf’s expression, blushed.

Wanting to ease his companion’s embarrassment, Yusuf offered,

“Poem? Song?”

“Yes,” said Nicolò too quickly.

“Moonlight on snow is as enchanting as your eyes. Poem,” replied Yusuf. By me, just now, he didn’t add.

It wasn’t Yusuf’s first snow, but it was the first one that mattered.

Aw. Thanks for reading! I like these two a lot. They are a Christian priest/knight and Muslim merchant who met during the first Crusade at the sack of Jerusalem and fell in love (after killing each other many times; they're immortal).

Thank you! I remember across a tumblr (which I can't find again) which was something like algeria-morocco-tunisia-libya which had about North African communities which lived in mountainous areas and were familiar with snow. So I though Yusuf might be familiar but Nicolo have more of (my own) wonder at it.
