Happy Valentine's Day!

For the past two weeks, I've been looking at the poetry of John Masefield. Luckily Salt-Water Ballads is online for free. I also listened to some of the poems read by Ronald Pickup. I enjoyed the tight rhymes and the singing quality of the verse and the story-telling. I did an intimation of "Cargoes" in Tattoos [ACD. Holmes/Watson. 800 words. Gen.] and think that I will go back to Salt-Water Ballads when I want inspiration for an addition to Sails & Anchors, my ACD nautical-themed ficlet collection.

My favourite love poet is Pablo Neruda. I've been to one of Neruda's houses, Isla Negra, in Valparaíso, Chile. So I went to his love poems and sonnets for inspiration and tried my hand at a tiny bit of verse in Spanish for Mother Tongue [ACD. that rarest of rare pairs Lestrade/Lomax the sublibrarian from "The Illustrious Client." 500 words. Gen.].

And finally, though not verse, I had Agatha Christie's Miss Marple muse on love for the picture prompt fun comm.

From now until the end of March, I plan to focus on Mary Oliver. I've got her two books on writing poetry from the library as well as American Primitive and am still on the waiting list for a selected works collection.

Thank you! Lovely icon from LJ days when the icon maker was doing a batch, thought it would suit Valentine's Day!

Re poetry, do you seek out new poets / poetry online through recommendations or poetry posted online? Or mostly through books?

Although he was the UK's poet laureate for 30+ years, Masefield was new to me. But I liked what I read a lot.

"..." I didn't know Masefield was British let alone he was poet laureate and I'm based in the UK. eeps. *slinks off*
