Day 11: What would make you leave a fandom, or prevent you from getting into it in the first place?

Mostly, it's comments on fic. If I get disturbing comments, then I am more likely to take a break from ficcing in that fandom or in that particular AU or pairing.

I get very fearful of and anxious about posting stories because I don't want to draw a particular commentor's attention. That's happened with most of my major fandoms. I puts a bad taste in my mouth, and I am reminded that I do this for fun in my spare time and if it isn't fun, I need to drop it. I am not a Writer. I don't have stories inside me that absolutely need to get out.

Also, I don't consume a lot of TV or films, so if I am not familiar with the source material, obviously, I am not going fic about it.

I think unpleasant/rude comments are a real turn off for participating.

And reading a number of other responses to this question, it seems that for most people it's about the friends they've met, the enjoyment of writing, but no longer much actual participation in a particular fandom.

Yes, but a lot depends on the mood I am in when I read them. Like that one who 'forgave me' for what 'did' to Holmes and Watson by putting them in about two dozen porny scenarios (including a threesome with Victor Trevor) just made me laugh.

Or how vested I am in the story itself. I got a visit from the Red Pen brigade on Strange Compass (a Spook Me fic) and I love Hallowe'en and I love Spook Me and I was under a time crunch and didn't get it beta'ed for that and it just stung. Or I really, really loved my PI Crowley but the obnoxious comments sort of soured it, and I've only written 1 very short fic for Good Omens since then (though I may write one again for this bingo set).

I see. Yeah, it takes a lot for me to squee over a piece of media. I don't care about Marvel or The Witcher or Harry Potter or a lot of the things that have been fandoms.
