petals like leaves, scarlet and veined
on cards, on altars, under trees
in windows, too, so it’s ordained
naught without petals, scarlet and veined
seasonal symbol, unrestrained
employment, everywhere one sees

away Christmas! no more of these!

quiet lay the snow
upon the soft southern downs
in stillness, in peace
everyone and everything
tucked in tight, sleeping soundly
