Summary: Percy tells Thomas of the haunted Great Grimpen Mine.
It was a busy day on the Island of Sodor, but Thomas, a cheeky little blue engine, was taking a break and chatting to his best friend Percy, who knew all the gossip on the island because he was pulling the post train that day.
“Who’s that?” asked Thomas, nodding with his chin towards a grey engine puffing in the distance.
“That’s Mortimer,” said Percy. “He’s going to be working in the Great Grimpen Mine.”
“But the Great Grimpen Mine isn’t real!”
“Of course, it is, Thomas. It’s beyond the Blue Mountain Quarry.”
Thomas frowned. “I don’t remember seeing any mine.”
“I’m not surprised, Thomas. It’s been abandoned, caved in, unused, even unseen, for ages!”
Thomas hummed thoughtfully.
“And it’s haunted!” added Percy, his eyes wide.
“Haunted!” echoed Thomas. “Cinders and ashes!”
“Oh, yes, there’s a ghost train that haunts the Great Grimpen Mine. It’s been seen at night. Glowing. With a horn that ‘Woo-woo-woo!’ just like big dog. Then it just vanishes into thin air. That’s why none of the trains at the Quarry will go near the Mine, not even Paxton or Rheneas.”
By now, even Percy’s green paint was beginning to quiver, but Thomas was curious.
“I wonder,” he said. “But surely, they aren’t going to have just one engine working at a mine.”
“No. Mortimer is the first, but Sir Topham Hatt is waiting for a very important engine to arrive.”
“I’m a very important engine!” peeped Thomas.
“It seems, a long time ago, there was a particular type of engine that used to work at the Great Grimpen Mine, but that one by one, these engines had accidents and couldn’t work anymore. The useful parts were reused, and the rest was discarded in the junkyard!”
Thomas scowled. He didn’t like the junkyard.
“What kind of engine?” he asked.
“It’s called a Baskerville. And Sir Topham Hatt has found one and he’s bringing it here. I hear it is a beautiful midnight blue!” Percy sighed.
“I’m a beautiful, uh, morning blue,” said Thomas, not quite certain what kind of blue he was.
“This engine is something special, Really, Really Useful, and it’s going to be the main engine working in the Great Grimpen Mine. Sir Topham Hatt is very excited.”
That decided Thomas.
“You know what, Percy? When that Baskerville arrives, you and I are going to convince Sir Topham Hatt that it’s a good idea for us to help with the mine. And we’re going to get to the bottom of this ghost business, too.”
Percy’s mouth hung open.
“No, Thomas! I don’t want to tangle with a ghost that glows in the dark and goes ‘Woo-woo-woo!”
“Nonsense. There’s no such thing as ghosts or ghost trains but thank you for telling me about Mortimer. I am going to go by the Blue Mountain Quarry and ask Paxton and Rheneas about the Mine.”
“Oh, Thomas, do be careful,” warned Percy.
“Don’t worry, I shall,” said Thomas. Then he chugged away with a determined ‘Peep, peep!’

Date: 2019-04-28 06:47 pm (UTC)I was thinking fusion but the problem is that there isn't a clear Sherlock Holmes (at least to me) in the Thomas world. Thomas isn't really brainy and Percy is much more timid than Watson so perhaps a straight crossover (where Holmes & Watson are transported to the Island of Sodor would be a easier fit (Sir Topham Hatt could be the client!).
