Just asking my friends if they have recommendations for:

scary movies

scary stories

any other autumn/Hallowe'en media or entertainment you want to recommend

I am in the mood to be scared!

I get the sense that most of you don't like scary stuff but there may be some gems out there I've not heard/seen/read before...

Two of my favourite newer scary movies are Suspiria (2018, by Luca Guadagnino) some kind of remake of Argento's film, and The Witch (or: The VVitch, 2015, by Robert Eggers)-- both super atmospheric and creepy, and I think no jump scares at all. Just nerve-wrecking, haha.

Also, The Horla by Guy de Maupassant (I think I told you already about that), which is maybe my favourite horror short story ever. (You can listen to it here, told by Peter Lorre in 1947.)

I actually love jump scares. But not so much gore (like copious amounts of blood or vomit or things like that).

Well, then you get some fair warning for Suspiria's last scene, haha. Without spoilering, but that's a quite, uh, colourful thing. I'm not sure anymore about which body fluids are exactly involved, but blood is definitely on board. In a Bacchantic way, if that makes sense. :D But really, it's a excellent juxtaposition to the gracious, powerful dance scenes-- wonderfully unsettling!! And Tilda Swinton is, once again, a force. ♥

You could try Plain Bad Heroines, by Emily M. Danforth, if you're looking for a full-length novel. I read it sometime last year and really enjoyed it. It's mostly atmospheric/psychological horror and for me at least was more unnerving than scary (but very nicely unnerving).

Diabolique -- I think I saw the original 1955 version. No gore, just extremely creepy, and the climactic scene made me go "aaaah!" even though I was expecting it at that point. (Not a jump scare.)
