Title: Adventurous
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Rating: Gen
Length: 300
For: GYWO Yahtzee Roll #1
Prompt: Adventurous
Summary: The bos'n wonders about Basil.
The bos’n didn’t know what to make of the man who called himself Basil. Was that his real name?
The bos’n doubted it.
Basil was adventurous, of course, any man who chose to go to sea had to have a bit of spirit in him. Otherwise, he’d never leave terra firma, as the bos’n’s old schoolmaster used to say.
And Basil was hard-working. That was appreciated given how many adventurous but lazy fellows seemed to find their way into the briny trade. Not that they could be too lazy until they got their shore leave. The ship would never allow too much idleness.
Basil was quiet, but that wasn’t strange. There were many who were that way. Kept their cards to their chest, and why not?
There were moments when he was as still as a glacier, and the bos’n sensed depths in the man which were hidden, like those gigantic floating blocks of ice, where one saw the sharp tip only not the fathoms of frozenness below the surface of the water.
Was he running to something? Or away from something?
Away. Definitely. The bos’n knew enough about sailors to know that.
But could trade winds, even hurricane winds, carry you away far enough and fast enough? Could you outrun your demons?
The bos’n was of two minds about the answer to that particular question. Sometimes he thought you could, sometimes he thought you couldn’t, out run your demons, that is.
And what might be Basil’s own demons? Not drink. Not women, either. His temper was even. He liked his pipe, but then who didn’t?
The bos’n didn’t know about Mister Basil, and that was for certain. But maybe, over a pipe or two, on a calm night, he would ask him.
And maybe, maybe, he’d get an answer.
