Wednesday's word is...
...chicane.
There are several definitions. The one I found in Cabaret Macabre by Tom Mead was the one in bold.
verb
1. to trick, cheat
noun
1. trickery
2. a. an obstacle on a racecourse
2. b. a series of tight turns in opposite directions in an otherwise straight stretch of a road-racing course
3. the absence of trumps in a hand of cards
example:
1. This was not aided by the fact that he had just reached a perilous chicane in the country road, which took considerable effort and concentration to navigate to prevent the Austin from veering off into a ditch.
