1. It's very foggy here, even at 1 pm in the afternoon. Not cold, really, but the fog isn't going away.

2. Yesterday I took Minisculus to the pediatric dermatologist to see about this DEAD TOENAIL. So the doctor clipped it with regular clippers (I could've done that!) and told me to rub it with Vaseline every night to get the rest of it to soften and come off (the dead part) but that it might be 18 months before a toenail grows back. I did not know it took that long. No infection. End of story.

3. We went down to Charlotte, North Carolia (about 400 miles south). I drove about 10 of the 14 hours. Minor placed #142 out of 203 in his age group. He ran a 4k in 15:53. His club won overall for his age group, however, so he got a big medal for that. Weather was cold but good. First time participating in a national cross country meet.

4. I have just finished making my last Christmas card. I haven't put them in envelopes yet, but the last batch is made. The boys' father went into the office today so I am enjoying the peace and quiet.

5. I have finally started working on my Xmas jigsaw puzzle.

5 DEC: International Ninja Day: If you could be a ninja for a day, what would you do?
I quite like the katanas and the swords so I'd probably spend a lot of time hacking watermelons and things.

6 DEC: Pawnbrokers Day: Have you ever pawned anything?
No.

7 DEC: Cotton Candy Day: What’s your favorite fair or carnival food?
Funnel cakes!

8 DEC: Pretend to be a Time Traveler day: What time period in the past would you like to visit?
Victorian/Edwardian London would be nice.

9 DEC: International Anti-Corruption Day: What size of a bribe would persuade you to do something illegal?
I'm cheap. Gimme $20.

10 DEC: Nobel Prize Day: Who in your life deserves a Nobel Prize and for what?
Posthumously, my mother. She put up with a hell of a lot of shit.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. I am being pulled in many different directions!

2. Artist commission bots are a thing on DW as well as AO3. I just got an email from one a couple of days ago (I blocked them). I don't want to lock my journal, but we'll see if it becomes a serious problem here on DW.

3. On Friday, the family is driving 7 hours south so that Minor can compete in the youth cross country nationals meet on Saturday. It should be interesting. We've not taken a road trip in a long time. I am grateful for the boys' father who took the car in early this morning to make sure our chariot is in tip-top shape.

4. Thanksgiving break was good. My running watch is dying so I ordered a new one. The Rudolph Run (6k) is on 22 Dec. It's very cold so I am not extremely motivated to train. But next week should be warmer (if wetter).

20 NOV: Children’s Day: What’s your happiest childhood memory?
I tend to not think about my childhood. My grandfather's rose bush for me. The rose was a pale purple/silver color.

21 NOV: World Television Day: What are the best and worst aspects of television?
I don't watch television anymore at all. When I worked at a nursing home, the constant noise of TVs was a real torture, especially daytime TV. I don't judge anyone who finds enjoyment in it, but I just can't find anything positive to say.

22 NOV: International Musicians Day: What country’s music (other than your own country) do you enjoy most?

South Korea!

23 NOV: International Aura Awareness Day: What aura do you think you have?
I don't know. Disgruntled or far from gruntled.

24 NOV: Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day: Do you have a unique (or unusual) talent?
I have the ability to catch popcorn thrown in the air in my mouth with usual accuracy. This ability translates into nothing else advantageous in my life.

25 NOV: International Hat Day: Do you have a favorite hat?
Yes. It makes me look like I have a grey woolly condom on my head but I like it.

26 NOV: Milk Day. Milk. Yay or nay?

Yay. In cereal. In coffee. In general, it's a good thing.

27 NOV: Slinky Day: Do you have a childhood toy you’ve kept into adulthood?
No. I tend to forget about my childhood which includes the accoutrement. I do have my Christmas stocking, though, from childhood. I use it to wrap fragile ornaments in the Xmas box.

28 NOV: Thanksgiving: What are you thankful for?
My few but very lovely friends and even fewer friendly acquaintances, like the cashiers at my grocery store. My meditation practice. My health. Crafting. BTS.

29 NOV: Black Friday: Do you look good in black?
Yes! It's what I wear most of the time if I have to go somewhere other than errands or appointments (like Minor's choral concert).

30 NOV: Personal Space Day: What do you do when someone invades your personal space? I move back and make a note to avoid that person in the future if possible.

1 DEC: Antarctica Day: What’s your favorite polar animal?
They are all pretty cute. Baby seals. Arctic foxes. Polar bears. Penguins.

2 DEC: World Pear Day: Pears. Yay or nay?
Yes but they go bad so fast. I hardly every buy them. I associate them with Christmas time.

3 DEC: Giving Tuesday: When is the last time you were generous with time, money, or something else?
I generously didn't strangle Minor last night when he tried my last nerve and was moody-teenager-sullen about it.

4 DEC: International Day of Banks: Where is the strangest place you’ve found or hidden money?
I once hid $800 in a Biostatistics textbook. Yes, I am a weirdo.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. I am not feeling my best these days mentally. I don't know if it is seasonal affective disorder or post-election blah or vacation drop but it is a great effort to push through the day. I am thinking that when I start in earnest on the Xmas cards maybe I will start playing carols and get in the spirit of things and that will pump me up.

2. I finished my sister's Xmas gift. I will post about it on Friday. It is a flip book. I don't know if she will appreciate it but that's life. I am also going to collage with the ephemera I got in Aruba. I may try an altered book with the travel guide. I've done 2 xmas cards already.

I saw this theory on the internets that creating and consuming are a spectrum and that if you keep yourself more in the creating end of things than the consuming end of things, your mental health will be better. So, I am looking at crafting as therapy and a healthy alternative to Youtube scrolling.

3. Regular season soccer of Minisculus is over. One less thing to worry about. Next week the boys have 2 half days and the rest of the week off for Thanksgiving. I have parent teacher conferences on Monday and I am going to see about getting Minisculus a doctor's appointment. I think he has some kind of fungus under his toenail. He is squawking continuously because he thinks they are going to amputate his toe, but it's been many months and it isn't healing by itself. I thought it was a bruise at first but I don't think it is.

4. Still training for the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. It is a 5k and I did it in 45:20 today.

5. The mice are back.

6. I ordered some regular 5 hour energy. I still maintain it is superior to the Extra Strength variety though I know not why. And I can't find the regular one in bulk in the store anymore.

13 NOV: Sandwich Day: What’s your favorite sandwich?

BLT with avocado. Tuna. Tomato & mayo on toast (with or without a fried egg)

14 NOV: Spicy Guacamole Day: Do you like spicy foods?

No.

15 NOV: Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day: Do you forget about food in your fridge for long periods of time?

No, I am vigilant about that stuff. Once in a while, something will slip by me (a can of whipped cream which went moldy) but it's rare.

16 NOV: International Day for Tolerance: What (or who) should you have more patience with?

The boys. Myself.

17 NOV: Homemade Bread Day: When’s the last time you made bread or ate homemade bread?

I have never made bread. I ate homemade bread as a child because a friend of my grandmother's made it, so maybe 35 years ago.

18 NOV: Apple Cider Day: Apple Cider. Yay or nay?

Nay. It's not bad but I won't go out of my way for it.

19 NOV: Have a Bad Day Day: What do you do when you have a bad day?

Jigsaw puzzles are remarkably therapeutic. Unfortunately the one I am working on now is REALLY hard.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. The next race will be a 5k Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving (28 Nov). The boys and their father and I run it every year. Then I have signed up for a very informal 6k on 22 Dec. This is organized by Minor's cross country coach and it's so informal it doesn't have a T-shirt and the entry fee was the cheapest I've ever known but I have discovered having an event to train for is much more motivating than not having one.

2. I have started a new craft project: a photo book for my sister of her orchids. It will be a flip book. I also made my first Christmas card today.

3. I am proud of Minisculus because he graduated to level 3 swimming. I suppose the practice in Aruba helped. I have signed him up for 1 more set of lessons beginning 19 Nov and then I think I will be satisfied unless he wants to go farther himself.

6 NOV: Saxophone Day: What’s your favorite musical instrument?

I like the way cello music sounds. I played trombone as a young person so I like the sound of it, too, and the clairnet.

7 NOV: Retinol Day: How happy are you with your skincare regime?

I am happy. I use a cleanser and a regular moisturizer with SPF and then in the winter I use a fancy moisturizer without an SPF (Creme de Mer) because my forehead gets very flaky with central heating.

8 NOV: Aid and Abet Punsters Day: If you like puns, what’s your favorite or most memorable?

I like them all. I like dad jokes, too. What did the Buddhist say to the hotdog vendor? Make me one with everything.

9 NOV: Carl Sagan Day: Do you have a favorite astronomer?

Galileo.

10 NOV: Sesame Street Day: Who is your favorite Sesame Street character?

Oscar and Cookie Monster

11 NOV: Origami Day: Do you know how to do origami?

No. The instructions always confuse me.

12 NOV: Fancy Rat & Mouse Day: What’s your favorite fictional mouse or rat?

[personal profile] smallhobbit's OC Mouselet. I also like Ratigan from The Great Moust Detective.
stonepicnicking_okapi: beach (beach)
1. The family is leaving for Aruba in less than 12 hours!! I need to finish packing.

2. I did another long run today. This one in 1:37:11 so I am still under the 2-hour limit. They call it the SAG wagon that picks you up if you are too slow. My only goal is to cross the finish line alive and ahead of the sag wagon.

3. I got my race packet. I was worried it would arrive while I was gone or be lost but, no, it arrived (parking pass, shirt, and bib). I am #90172. So the race is 9 am on 10 Nov. It is a 10 km race across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. I hope I don't fly off.

I have to do a State of the Ficcery today, too, so I will leave the rest for that. I will not be back until Tuesday 5 Nov.

25 OCT: Global Champagne Day: Champagne. Yay or nay?

I love champagne and the cheaper sparkling wine derivatives and the mixed drinks with it. Bring on the brunch Mimosas!

26 OCT: Howl at the Moon Night: Do you like werewolves?

Yes. Watson is a werewolf in one of my Sherlock Holmes AUs and given the adjacent werewolf-ness of Omegaverse, I spend a lot of time in that kind of world.

27 OCT: Visit a Cemetery: When’s the last time you visited a cemetery? I went to see the one my great aunt was buried in a long time ago. I was in my 20's. It was in Mobile, Alabama. I haven't been to the one my mother is buried in since the funeral which was 31 years ago. There isn't a reason for me to go back there.

28 OCT: Saint Jude’s Day: What do you consider a lost cause? People who like and vote for Trump. He is a hateful idiot. And you think it's a good idea to give him control of nuclear weapons.

29 OCT: Hermit Day: Does the hermit lifestyle appeal to you, why or why not? Yes. With independent wealth and lots of art and crafting supplies, sign me up!

30 OCT: Candy Corn Day: Candy Corn. Yay or nay? Yay! I bought my 3rd bag today. Nom, nom.
stonepicnicking_okapi: cat (cat)
1. I did my long run today! 10 k in 1:32:40. That's quick enough for me not to get picked up in the slow-poke wagon at the race. Let's hope I can keep it up.

2. I wrote 1k of my Spook Me ficlet this morning. I am constantly lowering the bar so I can get something done for it by Saturday and not default on both prompts. I think it will be a 2k ficlet. This is in the Venom fandom. No slash.

3. The leaves are changing here. It's pretty.

4. The boys and I watched: Gremlins (the original, which I liked a lot and they liked some--but they thought it was scary); Hocus Pocus (the original, we Did Not Finish this one. All three of us thought it was very stupid, and we turned it off about the 40-minute mark. I know many people enjoy it. It just wasn't our thing); and Haunted Mansion (the recent Disney version) The boys liked this one the best, I didn't mind it, but it didn't hold my attention (I ended up doing chores and walking in and out of the room). BUT it has a mostly POC cast. For me, the grief backstory (the 'my spouse died' backstory, I mean, which they do for 2 characters in this movie) is hit-or-miss. Sometimes I'm okay with it but in this case, I was rolling my eyes and sighing.

I have a horror classic movie collection to watch by myself.

5. One of my gentle readers gave me a good suggestion for a Very Special Halloween edition for my soap opera, so that's making me happy.

6. Jhope of BTS (Jung Hoseok) has completed his miiltary service! 2 out, 5 to go.

2 OCT: Audiophile Day: If you listen to audiobooks, who is/are your favorite narrator(s)?

I have many. Stephen Crichow. Robin Bailey. Jonathan Cecil. Dan Stevens. Joan Hickson.

3 OCT: Techies Day: Are you a techie?

No, sadly.

4 OCT: World Smile Day: Do you like your smile? How many different smiles do you have?

I have no opinion about my smile. I don't like having my photo taken. Some of that may be from being told to 'smile' as a child. Minisculus refuses to smile. I ask him, but he won't and I just take the picture.

5 OCT: Frugal Fun Day: What’s the best fun thing to do that’s free?

Go to the library. But today it cost me $23 to pay for a book Minisculus lost.

6 OCT: Mad Hatter Day: What’s your favorite Alice in Wonderland character?

The catepillar!

7 OCT: Forgiveness Day: Who (including yourself) do you need to forgive most and why?

It would be good if I could forgive myself for a series of serious errors in judgement, but I don't know that it's going to happen.

8 OCT: International Face your Fears Day: What fear do you need to face most?

DEATH!

9 OCT: World Post Card Day: When’s the last time you sent or received a postcard?

I sent cards for Halloween but they were in envelopes. I used to participate in Postcrossing international post card excahnge.

10 OCT: Cake Decorating Day: What’s the prettiest or most interesting cake you’ve ever seen (or made)?

There are a lot of them on the Youtube. I do wonder if those fabulous cakes actually taste good.

11 OCT: World Egg Day: If you found a bird egg on the ground, what would you do?

Leave it alone!

12 OCT: International Migratory Bird Day: If you had to fly south for the winter, where would you go?

An island.

13 OCT: Silly Sayings: What’s a common saying or axiom or proverb that you just don’t believe?

Bloom where you're planted. That's bullshit. Bloom where the soil norishes you, regardless of where you're planted.

14 OCT: Indigenous Peoples’ Day: What book or film or series about or created by indigenous peoples do you enjoy?

I have enjoyed the poems of Joy Harjo.

15 OCT: Global Handwashing Day: How many times a day do you wash your hands? Between cooking/preparing meals and going to the bathroom, it's probably around six or seven (?).

16 OCT: Dictionary Day: When’s the last time you looked up the definition of a word?

Every Monday for [community profile] 1word1day

17 OCT: Pasta Day: What’s your favorite pasta shape and/or favorite way to eat pasta?

I like shrimp scampi on angel hair.

18 OCT: International Necktie Day: Do you know how to tie a Windsor knot?

No.

19 OCT: International Gin and Tonic Day: What two things do you always associate together?

Pork chops and applesauce.

20 OCT: Croc Day: Do you own a pair of Crocs?

No. Minor does!

21 OCT: Reptile Awareness Day: When’s the last time you saw a live snake? What was your reaction?

I saw one at the lake a few months ago. I walked carefully around it.

22 OCT: INTERNATIONAL CAPS LOCK DAY: How often do you write/text in all caps? What emotion does it signify usually?

Not often but when [personal profile] bethctg does it, it makes me laugh.
stonepicnicking_okapi: cat (cat)
0. Look at my snazzy new Halloween icon. It's from the talented [personal profile] casey28 here: https://casey28.dreamwidth.org/40668.html

1. Gosh, it's been a chaotic few days. First, drama because Minisculus got invited to an arcade on Friday but his father made him go to his soccer game (part of a weekend tournament). But Minisculus scored and the team ended up winning for the FIRST TIME in the whole season. And it was 3-2 so his point made the difference. Yay. He did end up going to the sleepover after the game (same boy as arcade-birthday party).

But the mom called me in the morning saying Minsiculus vomited his breakfast. So Minisculus ended up skipping game #2 and slept SEVEN hours in the middle of the day. And was breathing very hard.

Meanwhile, the boys' father said he was leaving for Africa at 2:30 pm and he didn't leave until 5 pm. *rolls eyes*

Minsiculus was well enough to go to game #3 on Sunday and he played goalie second half and they scored twice on him and so he basically lost the team the game (and the tournament) AND some of the parents of OUR TEAM were talking bad about Minisculus on the sidelines where Minor could hear! I really, really hate soccer. It highlights the absolute worst in human beings. Shit talk a 9 year old who isn't your kid in front of the kid's brother. Yay.

Then I drove an hour into the country to take Minor to his track meet. He was #16 out of 50 in his age group but of course they only gave out ribbons for 1-15. :( But he wasn't the runner who got airlifted out by the State Troopers (!!!) in helicopter (!!!) so I guess it could have been worse.

2. Yesterday was a calm day. The boys went to school and I calmed down. I crafted and did Yoga with Adriene and it was okay.

3. Super Secret Craft Project #2 is about 70% done and SSCP #3 is about 55% done. I am making steady progress.

4. I haven't even started my Spook Me ficlets but I have told myself I just have to do 1k on each so lowering expectations to ficlet-length. I did do a Jimin update on the soap opera. I finished it two days after his birthday but still, it got done.

5. I've got Gremlins for the boys to watch and I thought we'd watch Hocus Pocus too. I've not seen the latter. But they have Friday off of school so we have time to watch stuff.

6. I'm up to 9.5 km in my training! I have lowered expectations as far as these two weeks. If I can get ONE long run in the next 12 days, I'm okay. Life just seems to intervene. New sneakers are good!

7. The upstairs neighbors still flood the bathroom and send water down through our vents at random times (like 10:15 this morning).

8. The bag of candy corn was opened and contents were consumed. I may have to get one more bag tomorrow. :)

9. Minor wants to do the travel cross country team which would mean traveling 7 hours south for a national meet the first weekend in December. His dad gave the okay so that's happening.

10. I still haven't gotten my pumpkin spice latte. Maybe tomorrow on shopping day.

11. I have less than 3 hours left on my audiobook version of Stephen King's IT which is 45 (!!!) hours.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. The most important news is that I bought a bag of candy corn. I know you were all worried. :) I can't physically eat it in one setting without making myself truly sick, and that is a good thing.

2. My etsy seller sent me a replacement batch of crafting goods, so I have resumed work on Super Secret Craft Project #2. SSCP #3 is coming along. I would say I'm about 40% done. Part 1 (of SSCP#3) is done and I'm less than halfway through part 2 (there are 3 parts total). Also something I ordered but which had been lost in the mail mysteriously appeared today (after 1 month missing in action).

3. The last of my Halloween cards are in the mail.

4. Gratitude: today I am thankful for the deer I saw at the lake this morning & candy corn & prodigal mail.

5. Today I focused on speed and not distance in my 10k training. My new sneakers are getting broken in.

6. The boys' father is scheduled to leave for Cameroon and Malawi on Saturday so I will be a single mother again for 2 weeks. He is supposed to return in time to go to Aruba. We shall see. I am not going to stress about it. This Aruba trip is His Business. It can stay His Business.

7. My library reserve of Beetlejuice came in! I wonder if the boys will like it.

8. This is Jimin week in BTS world. His birthday is 13 Oct. I will do a special update of my soap opera on Sunday.

9. New DW friend [personal profile] mx_morden is doing a 30 day song challenge. Here are two lists. I think these will be superhelpful: https://mx-morden.dreamwidth.org/24574.html
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. It was raining all day. I did a short run in the rain at the lake. Running in the rain has become my preferred method because there are so few people. I saw two interesting grey birds. I don't even know what they were. Like egrets but miniature. I got new sneakers on Saturday, and I am breaking them in (they are almost exactly like my old sneakers). I have 2 pair of shoes: Errand-running shoes and Run-running shoes (and never the twain shall meet) and so I gave my old Errand running shoes to the shop because they had so many holes in them.

2. I was crafting today so it was a good day.

3. I am starting to use a Water Pik to clean my teeth and the first session was hysterical. I think most of the bathroom was doused.

25 SEPT: World Pharmacists Day: Do you know your pharmacist?

There's a Rastafarian-looking gentleman at the supermarket pharmacy who I recognize but I'm not chummy with him.

26 SEPT: Johnny Appleseed Day: What’s your favorite type of apple? The only type I buy are Honey Crisp because they stay crunchy long enough for the boys' lunches (I pack their lunches for school every day).

27 SEPT: Bakery Day: Do you have a favorite local bakery? No. It's probably for the best.

28 SEPT: Good Neighbor Day: Are you a good neighbor? I try to be. The mother of the boy who lives downstairs is in the hospital so I invited him (the son, who is 12) to stay in our apartment when someone isn't home.

29 SEPT: Coffee Day: What’s your favorite coffee drink?

I like all kinds. Mochas are nice. Lattes are nice. Nothing 'salted.' And sometimes There's Too Much Going On, like I got some Dunkin Donuts S'mores flavored coffee and it was too much. Too many flavors I got confused. Right now I am drinking Starbucks Fall Blend and it's fine. Truth is I could drink Folger's Instant every day and be happy.

30 SEPT: Orange Shirt Day: Do you own an orange shirt? Peach, yes. Not orange-orange.

1 OCT: World Vegetarian Day: What’s your favorite vegetarian meal? Beans & rice!
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. I voted (by mail).

2. SSCP #1 arrived at its destination.

3. I got an email that an etsy order had been delivered on Saturday but it has not been delivered yet. It's a small problem but my brain is making it a big problem. I have just contacted the esty seller. I have tried to create an account on USPS.com (the post office website) to file a missing mail claim and it won't let me create an account. I have tried for 2 days. It is like a trapped bee in my brain, buzzing.

18 SEPT: Cheeseburger Day: Would cheeseburgers be served in your version of paradise?

I don't like cheese on my hamburgers. I like hamburgers with mayo and ketchup only.

19 SEPT: Talk like a Pirate Day: What would you do if you were a pirate?

I would sail to interesting places and spend a lot of time on the beach and eat nice seafood.

20 SEPT: International Day of University Sport: Do you follow a college team? Did you play sports in college?

No sports for me!

21 SEPT: Gymnastics Day: Can you or could you ever do a cartwheel?

Back when dinosaurs roamed, yes. Not now.

22 SEPT: Hobbit Day: What’s your favorite Hobbit? [personal profile] smallhobbit

23 SEPT: Pot Pie Day: Do you like meat pies?

Yes, chicken or shepherd's pie.

24 SEPT: Punctuation Day: What’s your favorite punctuation mark?

I always like when I am forced to use [brackets].
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. Crafting! A lot of my energy is going towards crafting. SSCP #1 is on its way to its final destination. SSCP #2 & #3 are underway. I have taken to using my bed as my workspace which is not ideal but it is convenient (and there's a big fan to keep me cool). I have only made one accidental slash to the comforter. I will post about the projects later in the year as they are gifts.

2. Too many fics spoil the okapi. I want to get my Bun Koo fic done so I can think about my Spook Me prompts. I have learned a lot about caring for rabbits. I just need to sit down and THINK. (and then, of course, sit down and WRITE).

3. The boys' father is having Buyer's Remorse about the Aruba trip which is manifesting in an unprecedented interest in saving money and household finances. To be fair, he has NEVER done anything like booking that trip in our 20 years of knowing each other so it's not surprising that he's second guessing himself. But it is annoying the way his anxiety is showing itself.

4. I enjoyed Conclave by Robert Harris (a novel about picking the next Pope) so I got another by him about the Dreyfus Affair (an event that sounds like would've been on my high school history test at some point). I like it. It's historical fiction based in real events. I am also reading the BTS book.

5. I had planned to do my long run today but bailed and did a half run. Maybe Friday.

11 SEPT: Libraries Remember Day: Do you have a favorite library?

I like our local library. The boys prefer the one in the system that is in the rural area because it is larger and has a different selection of graphic novels.

12 SEPT: School Picture Day: Do you have a favorite school picture (yours or someone else’s)?

Once in a while, the boys take a really nice school picture and I buy it. It's happened once or twice with each of them. Minor took an excellent track photo. It was so much better than his soccer ones. He really looks cool.

13 SEPT: Bald is Beautiful Day: Is bald beautiful?

Some people can pull it off!

14 SEPT: Fall Astronomy Day: Do you have a favorite planet or constellation?

No. I can rarely see them in the suburbs.

15 SEPT: Cheese Toast Day: Have you ever had cheese toast?

No, cheese toast for me.

16 SEPT: Guacamole Day: Do you have a favorite way to eat guacamole or a favorite recipe?

No cilantro! With chips, with nachos, on any kind of taco or quesadilla or Mexican food derivative.

17 SEPT: Voter Registration Day: Do you vote?

Absolutely. By mail these days.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
I kept a list last week and that made this easier.

1. I went to the state Renaissance fair on Sunday by myself and had a great time. I bought a small oil lamp (now I have to buy oil!). I watched Shakespeare, acrobats, people on stilts. About half of the hundreds and hundreds of people who attended were dressed up. More costumes than Halloween. People-watching was a lot of fun. Falconry demos and lots of giant turkey legs. Jousting. I got a new flower crown.

I had my fortune read. I was disappointed with the reading. I asked about work and basically the reader (a 75 year old lady who looked very tired) recommended I try a temp agency or get hired as a holiday worker at a store, which is fine and very common sense. It was more like advice from someone who doesn't really know me about making money right now (in the short term) instead of interpreting the cards. And she asked 'What does your husband think?' because the lovers card showed up in my present. The point is really not what my husband thinks. That's the opposite of the point, in fact. And it was a massive spread, really the biggest one I've ever seen. Maybe 20+ cards. I was yearning for encouragement and confidence and direction and got...well...whatever. I asked her about friends. And she said 'You've got friends!' and pointed to various cards. I was hoping for something like, you will have an opportunity to see your friends at some point, but whatever. Huzzah!

2. The neighbors upstairs keep flooding their bathrooms and causing leaks into the apartment. Both bathrooms. One time it was an overflowed toilet. Or they flood the shower. Apparently, there is a mother and 3 teenage sons recently moved from Saudi Arabia. It's not fun. Buckets everywhere catching leaks. I miss the smoking, loud gaming Russians (former occupants upstairs). Apartment living. I want to move 2026. We stay for the schools, specifically Minisculus'.

3. I got my 2025 Hobonichi in the mail so if I am not organized next year, I have only myself to blame. :) It's very comprehensive.

4. SSCP (Super Secret Craft Project) is done! I had to revise expectations severely twice, but I have finished. I will post about it in November. In about a week or so, I will move onto SSCP #2 & #3. Of course, I want to start autumn spreads. Then Hallowe'en cards!!

5. I am drinking Dunkin Donuts S'mores coffee. It is very fragrant! I have got some Starbucks Fall Blend in the cupboard.

6. Tomorrow is RM of BTS birthday! Woo hoo!

7. The English translation of Seishi Yokomizo's The Little Sparrow Murders is out. I am going to get a copy. Maybe save it for the Aruba trip.

5 SEPT: Be Late for Something Day: Are you a punctual person?
I try to be. Somethings you should be early for and some things you should be exactly on time for. It takes a while to figure out which is which.

6 SEPT: Dog Walker Appreciation Day: Would you like to be a professional dog walker?

No way. No puppers for me.

7 SEPT: World Beard Day: What’s the most famous beard you can think of?

*insert joke*

8 SEPT: Iguana Awareness Day: Would you ever keep an iguana as a pet?

My sister had an iguana named Uncle growing up. Sometimes Youtube throws up videos of iguanas in my feed. Not for me (no pets!) but interesting.

9 SEPT: Wonderful Weirdos Day: Who is the most wonderful weirdo you know?

I wouldn't call [personal profile] bethctg a weirdo but she has some mild quirks that I find amusing.

10 SEPT: Swap Ideas Day: Do you have someone you swap ideas with?

Sometimes I try to talk to the boys about my stories, especially if I am looking for plots. It can be a bit helpful. Sometimes. I mostly keep my own counsel about things.

1. The boys' father decided we should go on a family vacation. *picture a sort of interracial Griswolds* so he has decided we are going to Aruba next month (he's doing the bookings). We've never been on a family vacation. If you have been to Aruba and can recommend anything, let me know. Should be interesting.

2. I made a donation to Harris for President.

3. I am going to try a Hobonichi planner next year instead of making my own bullet journal. I ordered a Cousin A5 with a Scrabble type cover. It will be an experiment.

4. My AO3 account is nearing 3 million words. I'll cross that mark later this week with the soap opera.

5. [profile] bitsizedcleaning is running a kind of 'chore a day' September Stampede with daily check-in.

1 SEPT: World Letter Writing Day: When’s the last time you wrote a letter?

If postcards count as letters, I do them often. Growing up, I wrote letters to my grandmother and great aunts a lot.

2 SEPT: World Coconut Day. Coconut. Yay or nay?

I like Almond Joys (candy bar). I like the smell of coconut oil. I don't know about coconut water. I can take or leave it. In general, yay.

3 SEPT: Cinema Day: What are the benefits and drawbacks of watching movies in a movie theatre?

There are some films and things (like concerts) which are better seen on a big screen. Some 3D movies are cool. I like movie theater popcorn. :) Drawbacks are other people yapping.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. School has started. Ah!

2. On Saturday, I went to a craft swap hosted by the local public library and got a nice assortment of paper and do-dahs.

3. I got the boys' clothes sorted, too-small stuff put in storage or donation bag and clothes that fit on the the shelves.

4. I am working my way through 450 from Paddington and a 1940's Pacific detective noir called Five Decembers by James Kestrel. I'm working towards getting caught up on Fannish 50 and my soap opera (with a special update for Jungkook's birthday 1 SEPT).

5. I am going to start making a list for these posts because my mind goes blank when I actually sit down to type them out.

21 AUG: Senior Citizen’s Day: What’s the best thing about being a senior citizen?

Our neighborhood has a senior center which looks nice. I bet they have nice classes there.

22 AUG: World Plant Milk Day: What’s your favorite kind of plant milk?

I've only tried soy milk. It's okay. Minor is allergic to tree nuts so we don't have nut milks in the house.

23 AUG: Find Your Inner Nerd Day: What are you most nerdy about?

The precise use of words like 'interpreter' vs. 'translator.'

24 AUG: Pluto Demoted Day: Is Pluto a planet or not?

Yes! BTS wrote a song about it and it's the best extended metaphor love song I've ever heard.

25 AUG: Second-hand Wardrobe Day: What’s your favorite piece of clothing which originally belonged to someone else or bought at a thrift store?

I had a fleece jacket which belonged to an aunt which I liked very much. I commandeered the boys' father's sweatshirt as mine own and it's my top most layer when I go out for fall and winter.

26 AUG: Women’s Equality Day: What’s most needed in the world regarding women’s equality?

Reproductive freedom. Equal pay for equal work. Accessible cheap childcare for everyone.

27 AUG: Cinema Day: When is the last time you were in a movie theatre?

When I saw the Agust D documentary in April.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. School starts on Monday. I can't wait!

2. Minor has decided he is going to use the public library recording booth to record a song (at the rural branch). He laid the drum track and saxophones today.

3. I finished (most of) part 1 of Super Secret Craft Project. I need to buy one thing and make some very small fun embellishments but the bulk of it (the hard work) is done. On to part 2, which will (have to) be smaller.

4. Minisculus scored a goal in one of the 3 pre-season games on Saturday. Very proud of him. Maybe this is a good harbinger for the season. Minor starts cross country tomorrow.

5. I've decided to put a chapter of my soap opera in Hong Kong so I have been watching parts of Cantonese films, travel videos, and Rush Hour 2 (which is REALLY not my kind of film). I have also claimed a prompt for the Bun Koo fest and have checked out some books on rabbit care.

Edited to add: Let me know in the comments if you have favorite stories about rabbits? I know Watership Down, The Velveteen Rabbit, and Bunnicula but maybe there are others?

---

14 AUG: World Calligraphy Day: What kind of calligraphy do you admire?

All of it. English, Islamic, Asian languages. The only kind I don't like is the kind I'm supposed to be able to read and can't because it's too ornate.

15 AUG: Leathercraft Day: Do you own an item of leather you especially like?

No.

16 AUG: Men’s Grooming Day: Beards, moustaches, and sideburns. Yay or nay?

I'm not particularly fond but some men can make them work.

17 AUG: Black Cat Appreciation Day: Do you like black cats? Do you see any animal as inherently ‘bad luck’? I love black cats. So pretty. The mice that are currently infesting my apartment are the manifestation of bad luck--for me! :(

18 AUG: World Helicopter Day: Have you ever ridden in a helicopter?

No. But I would love to! It's on the bucket list of [personal profile] smallhobbit if I make it across the pond to visit her.

19 AUG: International Orangutan Day: What animal is most likely to commit a murder?

Man! [That was an easy one.] Also fire ants don't play.

20 AUG: World Mosquito Day: What’s the best way to deter mosquitos?

Garlic in the blood. Also good for vampires!
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. This is the next to last week of summer, and there are things going on next week, so it feels like the last week of easy-going, relaxed summer.

2. SSCP (Super Secret Craft Project) is coming along but I am waiting on something I ordered before I can really dig in. I went with Minor to Michael's on Sunday and there is nothing like a 13-year-old for keeping one under-budget and away from impulse buying.

3. SUGA's DUI has upset me very much. There's no excuse for drunk driving, any kind of vehicle for any length of distance, especially if he blew a .227 as the Korean media have reported, on a Tuesday night. That's near blackout level of intoxication and the fact he could operate anything but the pavement with that much alcohol in his blood means he's an alcoholic, which I knew. I thought he was a functioning alcoholic, but that's not functioning. Korean culture doesn't really embrace rehab as far as I can see, so I don't think he's going to get help. And what kind of help would actually help someone in his position? What he has going for him is time, he's got almost a year of service left so he has time to get himself together. And who knows? Maybe great songs will come out of this situation. But it's a shame because he had a drinking show (see: functional alcoholic) and he had such high hopes for it becoming a legitimate talk show type thing. Anyway, new bias: jhope! He has the alcohol tolerance of a toddler.

4. Still training for the 10 k.

5. Still updating my soap opera. Ficwise, I've recently gotten a lot of lovely comments on my Jeeves & Wooster fics so with a certain disenchantment with BTS growing from #3 maybe I will go back to Bertie (?)

6. Re-listening to some Ngaio Marsh Inspector Alleyn audiobooks.

7 AUG: Particularly Preposterous Packaging Day: What’s the most unnecessary packaging you’ve ever seen?

The most recent example is a book the boys' father got about leadership which he has to read for his promotion and was a normal-sized book which came in a HUGE box.

Also, Lays potato chips are ALWAYS 1/10 of the bag.

8 AUG: Pickleball Day: Do you play pickleball?

No. But I am thinking of learning.

9 AUG: Book Lovers Day: What was one of your favorite books as a child that you haven’t re-read in a long time?

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

10 AUG: S’mores Day: Have you ever eaten s’mores?

I love s'mores! But aparatment living in the suburbs doesn't offer opportunities to eat them.

11 AUG: Popsicle Day: What’s your favorite flavor of popsicle?

Grape! Orange!

12 AUG: World Elephant Day: If given the chance to ride an elephant, would you?

In a heartbeat!

13 AUG: Prosecco Day: What’s your favorite celebratory beverage?

I usually drink cava, but I like everything in the pseudo-champagne line. I've never drank actual champagne.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. The boys and their father are going to a professional soccer game. European clubs are doing exhibition matches in the US, so I will have approximately 5 whole hours tonight completely to myself. Huzzah. I may craft or I may read or I may fic or I may work on a jigsaw puzzle. Or watch 2 different versions of 4:50 from Paddington. Or who knows! I am excited. I am definitely having ice cream with caramel sauce.

2. SSCP (Super Secret Craft Project) update I went to Joann's Fabric Store for the first time and got overwhelmed. It's 4 times bigger than the small Michael's craft store I normally go to. But I got some supplies. I thought of it after a comment by [profile] malindaldarose and I thought it was very far but there is one much closer than I thought. It is junky. So you have to hunt. Lots of clearance shelves and racks and a few weary-looking employees. BUT they sell the Tim Holtz stuff I love and once I know what I need and have an even more precise list, I think I will go back. I was planning on going tomorrow but the boys' father announced he is going into the office so I'd have to take the boys with me and I was overwhelmed enough on my own, no thank you.

For SSCP, I tea-dyed paper for the first time. I also learned how to fold my own envelopes. My project box is filling up. I won't do a reveal until late in the autumn, though.

3. I showed the boys the film Edward Scissorhands (it is almost 35 years old!) which they liked. I have reserved The Karate Kid (the original) and Back to the Future to round out the Mom summer movie series. The boys (and I) have both finished their Mom book clubs.

4. I took the boys to the pool. We are supposed to get some rain from Hurricane Debby on Saturday. We went to the county fair. I signed Minor up for cross country (autumn is cross country, spring is track with the same running group) for the autumn. I am going to try to get Minisculus in some swimming lessons too.

5. School starts on the 26 Aug.

6. I finished a manga! BUNGO Stray Dogs #1, story by Kafka Asagiri and art by Sango Harukawa. It takes me a LONG time to read comic books (and comically long time) and this one is in Japanese order. But I liked it. The main character becomes a tiger by the light of the moon.

Questions

31 JULY: Avocado Day: Do you like avocados?

I love avocados but I am not good at picking out good ones and they're expensive. I rarely get them.

AUGUST

1 AUG: Girlfriend’s Day: What are the ideal qualities in a girlfriend?

I have imaginary girlfriends. I suppose that's the ideal quality given my stage of life right now. Ha, ha. I am still having a daydream series about a kind of Golden Girls friend/girlfriend group. In the last episode, I donated a kidney to one of them.

2 AUG: Coloring Book Day: Do you color as an adult?

No. Adult coloring books are so small (meaning the lines are very thin or shapes are tiny), they don't make any sense to me. I like big blocks of color. Like for crayons.

3 AUG: Friendship Day: What’s the key to a lasting friendship?

Having something (still) in common and investing time and self in the relationship.

4 AUG: Coast Guard Day: Ever had to be rescued?

I have already mentioned getting stuck in the mud alone in a remote part of Chile and a farmer's helper pulling me out. In my 20's I was often rescued by random strangers.

5 AUG: Underwear Day: What color(s) are your underwear?

Today it's a light blue/grey.

6 AUG: Fresh Breath Day: How uncomfortable is having bad breath or being near someone with bad breath?

I really don't like it. For some reason eating bananas makes my mouth feel gross so I always brush my teeth after. Yeah, really heavy cigarette or coffee breath or just bad breath is very unpleasant to me.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
Edited to add & ask: I would like to contribute to the Harris campaign but I want just a one-time donation and not to be harassed for the rest of my life and put on some list until eternity. Is there anyway to do this?

1. The boys' father is supposed to be returning tomorrow evening. We'll see. I will start the welcome back cleaning when I know he is on the plane.

2. Now that I finished my cross stitch, I am going to embark on a Super Secret Craft project to be revealed toward the end of the year.

3. It is a very humbling realization this morning I have gained and lost the same 10 lbs for seven whole months. One step forward, one step back. It is very dispiriting. I swing between despair at not being able to stick to healthier habits and get the weight off and despair at letting this take up so much of my mental energy.

4. I showed the boys Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last week. And showed the boys The Matrix this week and they liked it. They said more than once 'oh, so that's where it comes from.' So many memes and pop cultural references in that film. And they were only scared at one point. The next one is Edward Scissorhands.

24 JULY: International Self Care Day: What do you do for self care?

I don't know that I practice self care, per se. Or think of it like that. I collage. I force myself to exercise. I meditate every day. I do yoga. I read.

25 JULY: World Drowning Prevention Day: Do you know how to swim?

I never took formal lessons. I do a modified dog paddle.

26 JULY: FBI Day: What’s your favorite FBI agent (real or ficitional)?

Spencer Reid!

27 JULY: Love is Kind Day: What’s the last act of kindness you performed?

I finished my gift cross stitch and mailed it off.

28 JULY: Buffalo Soldiers Day: Do you like reggae music?

I like Bob Marley. I don't know a lot about it, but yes, I like the beats.

29 JULY: Rain Day: Do you like rain?

I love the rain!!

30 JULY: Cheesecake Day: What’s your favorite flavor of cheesecake?

Minisculus and I went to The Cheesecake Factory a couple of weeks ago so I am up on the possibilities. He got plain and I got chocolate chip cookie dough.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. Minor has Songwriting for Film & TV camp this week, but I was thrown off yesterday because he woke up vomiting and thus didn't go yesterday and I had to deal with him. So, I am a day late on the personal update. Soccer camp ended well last week for Minsiculus and Minor.

2. I got all of Minisculus' school supplies today. Early but it was like a scavenger hunt for him and me at the store with The List, trying to find all the items. And it was much cheaper than I remember last year's haul was. So yay.

3. I watched the 1971 "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" film with the boys. They liked it, and now they sing the Oompa Loompa song all the time. I have just checked out "The Matrix." We'll see if they like that, too.

17 JULY: World Emoji Day: What emoji do you use most?
This one: 🤣

18 JULY: Nelson Mandela Day: Who is your hero?

The artist Alma Thomas. She didn't begin her painting career until she was in her late 60's.

19 JULY: Celebration of the Horse Day: Have you ridden any animal other than a horse?

I don't think so.

20 JULY: World Chess Day: Do you know how to play chess?

I know the rules, but I don't play. It's the thinking ahead and strategy which always stump me.

21 JULY: Legal Drinking Age: When did you take your first sip of liquor?

I was in the Peace Corps! It was a shot of cranberry vodka bought for me by another volunteer.

22 JULY: Mango Day. Mangos. Yay or nay?

I like mangos and mango-flavoured things. The boys father loves them so I buy them when he's in town.

23 JULY: Math Week: Do you like math?

There's a beauty to it. But the boys' father has a certain stare which means he's thinking about statistics. I don't get to that stage.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. Minor had another date last night with a different girl. Adventures in being thirteen!
2. Both the boys have soccer camp this week from 8-2 pm. That meant yesterday I spent 2 whole quiet hours cross-stitching. Not one interruption. No gaming noise. No whining. It was so good! I also go to the lake as soon as I drop the boys off to get my running in early. It's up in the 100's temperature-wise here.
3. The boys' father left on Sunday. I haven't heard from him. I assume he arrived in Congo-Brazzaville okay.
4. I am finishing my book bingo quickly.
5. Kim Seokjin of BTS was a torch bearer in the Olympics. So proud of him.

10 JULY: Kitten Day: Would you ever take care of a kitten?

No way. No pets, ever. Too much work. Too much mess. No amount of unconditional love with worth the smell and the vet bills.

11 JULY: Cheer up the Lonely Day: What’s the best way to cheer up the lonely?

CASH! ha, ha. No. I think finding a hobby is the best way. Then maybe you meet people but at least you're busy and occupied. My spiritual guru would say help someone. Some kinds of loneliness are just navel-gazing and self-absorption disguised so if it's available (that the trick, finding something worthwhile that's within your abilities and scope), finding a way, big or small, to help someone else is the best way to cure loneliness.

12 JULY: Motorcycle Day: Have you ever driven a motorcycle or ridden on the back of one?

I love riding on the back of motorcycles but I haven't done it in over a decade. Someday my prince will come, riding a Hog.

13 JULY: International Skinny Dipping Day: Have you ever been skinny dipping?

I don't think so.

14 JULY: Bastille Day: Is there any place you’d like to storm?

This makes me think of Black Friday sales back in the day, getting up at 4 am to go with my aunt and cousins to storm the Wal-mart. I think my storming days are over.

15 JULY: Gummi Worm Day: Have you ever eaten a gummi worm?

Yes, but I like the bears better!

16 JULY: World Snake Day: What would you do if you could shed your skin?

I wouldn't mind having a darker complexion.
