a timid boy with too-big ears
no one thought he’d become, not he,
shy, beset by doubts and fears,
a most ambitious man

though still a child, he wed a bride
then left to study law abroad
eyes growing wide with every stride
a most ambitious man

frank failure at home, once more sent
afar, to ply his chosen trade,
on a long journey south, he went
a most ambitious man

thrown off a train, left in the cold,
to shiver, shake, think and pray
about what his future would hold
a most ambitious man

decided, determined, he fought
resisting, he brought together
people, insisting he was not
a most ambitious man

two decades of opposition,
returning home to throw off yolk
and lead a peaceful sedition

a most ambitious man
not through hate, always by loving
freedom from ego, reducing
his self-will, himself to nothing
a most ambitious man
