“Indeed, sir?”
“Aunt Dahlia declares her cook, that wizard summoner of the gastric juices Anatole, has been kidnapped! She is beside herself with grief and apprehension. Wait, Jeeves, you look distressed. No, don’t try to deny it. My powers of observation are such that you might well find tobacco in the toe of my Persian slipper. You never look distressed. Why are you distressed?”
“I regret to inform you, sir, that on the way home, a trio of unsavory characters attempted to seize my person and deposit me into the rear compartment of a lorry. I am pleased to inform you that the attempt failed. Thus, the dishevelment. Excuse me, sir, while I make a swift restoration to my personage and join you in aiding Mrs. Travers in her hour of need.”
“Yes, Jeeves, it is time for all good men to come to the aid of the party, but—”
Further discussion was halted by the ringing of the telephone.
“Don’t answer it, Jeeves. These evils come in threes. Your attack, Anatole’s kidnapping, what fresh horror awaits us?”
Jeeves was like the deaf disheveled adder to my plea.
“Is it Aunt Dahlia?” I demanded a few minutes later.
“No, sir. Mister Little. He reports that Penelope had disappeared, and there are clear signs, well, that she did not leave of her own volition.”
“Penny the perfect housemaid, the one who keeps the Bingo residence the envy of all and sundry? Egad, Jeeves, what shall we do?”
“Scotland Yard, sir. And forthwith.”
“I agree. A villain of rare form is trying to assemble an inimitable downstairs by force! He must be stopped!”
