1. I got to the murder in my soap opera! I put so much of life on hold to write it, and I'm pleased with how it turned out. The story is switching gears from heat-porn to murder mystery, which is nice. There is the murder of a wealthy old Alpha man who hired the young Alpha undergardener to see to his young Omega husband's heats [we all know how that turns out] but everyone had a reason to kill the old man because he helped out people in trouble and then used it to control them (subtle blackmail) so the family doctor, the cook, the head gardener, the manservant, they all have reasons to want him dead. And there's 4 pieces of the old man's art collection gone missing on the day of his murder. And there's a lovable Doberman Pincher named BAM. So the detective has come to town to solve the murder (INITERPOL doesn't work like that, but I don't care. My detective investigates Art and Cultural Heritage Theft) and find the missing art but he's got secrets and a reason to want the old man dead, too. dum-dum-DUM!

2. The boys' father is scheduled to go to Congo-Brazzaville for two weeks. He supposed to leave on Sunday. So I am gearing up for that.

3. I finished 2 more book bingo squares. I am working on 1 more. I am also working on my All of Agatha, trying to get through a Mary Westmacott.

4. I'm working on a craft project with the boys. We are doing our book club. 1 or 2 chapters a day for each book. I did some cleaning.

5. On Saturday, the boys' father and I took the boys to a library branch out in the rural area because there was a passport office inside. It's a large lovely library with all kinds of cool things like a maker lab with 3d printer and a recording studio. The boys asked to go back and we will. It's about 20 minutes away.

4 JULY: Fourth of July: Fireworks. Yay or nay?

I love fireworks. I grew up in South Carolina where they are legal and shot all year round. When I was still speaking to my Trump relatives, I would drive down to Mississippi and stop in Tennessee and buy $200 worth of fireworks and shoot them off for whatever holiday I was visiting them for. Nothing says business like needing a grocery cart at the fireworks stand.

My sister and her friends used to get in bottle rocket wars and shot them at each other. Roman candle wars too. It's a wonder we all survived.

5 JULY: Bikini Day: When is the last time you wore a bathing suit?

An hour ago! I took the boys to the pool today.

6 JULY: Play Outside Day: What’s your favorite outside game?

Badminton. I like blowing bubbles for kids too.

7 JULY: Chocolate Day: What’s your favorite way to eat chocolate?

Copiously! Seriously, I am trying to be more responsible about my chocolate consumption so going on advice from [personal profile] acorn_squash, I just ordered some from Equal Exchange and Theo's. I'm trying to go for quality (and fair trade) rather than quantity and stuffing myself into a larger size of clothing.

8 JULY: Coca-Cola Day: Coca-cola. Yay or nay? Yay!

I love Coke. I am from a part of the US that calls all soft drinks 'Coke.' I think the Coca-Cola family paid for my entire university campus. I have visited the World of Coke more than once. It's an experience!

9 JULY: Dimples Day: Do you have dimples? Do you find them attractive?

No. I have wrinkles. But how can you not find them attractive? [Kim Namjoon, leader of BTS and the detective in my fic]

1. I got a gold star for Momm-ing because I took the boys to the petting farm AND the pool today.

2. Seokjin of BTS is going to be a torchbearer in the Olympcs! So proud of him.

3. Yesterday was a beautiful day, temperature wise but it is going to get warmer every day for a while.

4. I have worked out a deal with Minor where he makes some meals and I pay him secretly. It will free me up from a task I hate and give him a bit of pocket money (his dad put an end to allowances in January).

5. Politically speaking, I wish I didn't have to choose between a presidential candidate actively trying to kill him and a candidate passively trying to kill me.

Nothing terribly exciting going on, to be honest.

Questions

26 JUNE: Canoe Day: When’s the last time you were in a canoe?

I cannot remember. Probably about 20 years ago.

27 JUNE: Onion Day: Onions. Yay or nay?

Yay. I like the flavor. I like them fried--either diced in something (like eggs) or onion rings.

28 JUNE: International Lightning Safety Day: Have you ever seen something struck by lightning?

Yes, a friend of my grandparents. The buttons on his shirt left scars on his chest.

29 JUNE: World Camera Day: Do you own a camera (besides your phone)?

No. We got rid of it during the last Marie Kondo purge.

30 JUNE: Social Media Day: What are the best and worst parts of social media?

Funny posts are the best part. The worst part is that I think it encourages a bit more navel-gazing than is healthy.

1 JULY: Second Half of the Year Day: How has the first half of 2024 been for you?

Okay. Could've been worse, could've been better. Minor's grades went down, but he tried track and likes it. Minisculus finished two rounds of swimming lessons but I got a call from the principal saying his friends chased and threatened a girl who kicked him on the bus (that's my kid the Godfather of 3rd grade). The boys' father got a promotion. We bought 2 desks. I got into a fender bender but the leak in the car finally got fixed. I ran a 5k and signed up for a 10k. I've lost and gained the same 10 lbs over and over again. Minisculus fell off a scooter and bloodied his mouth but didn't lose any teeth.

2 JULY: World UFO Day: Do you believe in UFOs?

No, only in theory and in fiction.

3 JULY: International Plastic Bag Free Day: How often do you use cloth or non-plastic bags?

Our county instituted a fee per bag in shops so I try to use more but we use them as bin liners so I sometimes pay anyway.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. Minor has asked a GIRL to go to the movies with him. *sobs in 'my baby is growing up too fast'*

2. Curating two boys screen-time during a heat wave (when the pool is still under renovations) is not fun.

3. I'm working on another OM cross stitch. I'm trying to fill more squares of my Book Bingo. I finished my Intoabar fic. I am hauling my fat ass to the lake to run (2 mornings in a row!). I saw a bunny today.

19 JUNE: Watch Day: Do you wear a watch?

Yes, almost always. I have a Garmin sports watch which I use for timing my runs and for counting steps.

20 JUNE: Summer Solstice: What’s the best part of summer?

Watermelon!

21 JUNE: Selfie Day: Do you take selfies?

No. I have a self-loathing trigger of photos and mirrors so I avoid them as much as possible. I did have to take one yesterday, however, for the pool pass for the apartment. I try to just do it and upload it wherever necessary and never look at it. The sad thing is that that means there are no photos of me and my sons, just photos of them and their father. I don't care because I get sick looking at photos of myself but I think other people would think that is weird or sad. I didn't have a problem until I got pregnant the first time and a friend (who liked photography) asked to take some pregnancy photos and seeing them made me sick, vomiting, self-harm urges, etc. I still don't want any but doing the profile photo yesterday didn't make me vomit. Passport photos, driver's license, I can trick my brain into thinking it's business.

22 JUNE: Worldwide VW Beetle Day: Do you like VW Beetles?

They are cute, cars and vans. I have an aunt who LOVED her gold bug and kept it long after it actually ran properly.

23 JUNE: Typing Day: How well do you type?

Pretty good. It was a class in middle school.

24 JUNE: International Fairy Day: Do you believe in fairies?

No, but they are pretty on stickers and in collages.

25 JUNE: Day of the Seafarer: Have you (or would you) ever go on a sea voyage?

Yes, I'd love it. Next lifetime, I'm going to be a sailor! Or fisherperson!
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. I'm feeling singularly unmotivated to do anything but the minimal.

2. I bought 3 sports bras. I would rate one a 6/10 and unfortunately that it the one with the zipper. The other one is a 10/10 but I have to wiggle like a goat being digested by a boa constrictor to get my fat torso into it. And the third (in the clearance rack--HOT PINK!), I haven't tried out yet.

3. Minsiculus played a card game at school called Exploding Kittens and I got him a deck and we've been playing it as a family every night. It like a complicated UNO but we are enjoying it so far.

4. I ordered a desk for the computer my friend gave me and Minor and his father put it together. So now the boys have their own workstation.

5. Yesterday, we went to the library. I found a book (2 copies of it) to do a Mom's Summer Reading Club with Minisculus. It's called Montgomery and the Case of the Golden Key by Tracy Occomy Crowder. I have reserved 2 books that might do for a Summer Reading Club with Minor but it's more difficult as almost none of the fiction books on the Middle School List were things I thought I could withstand. I think I might go for something on the non fiction list. It's easier to find common ground. I REALLY don't like coming of age.

6. Yesterday I also got them McDonalds. V from BTS has a sweet way of saying 'Oreo McFlurry' and I always want to get one, but I don't because it might set a precedent with getting shakes for the kids. But I was very tempted. Oreo McFlurry.

7. Now, of course, I've got Intoabar. I am going to let Sherlock Holmes tackle why Miss Marple's nephew's wife/fiancee is sometimes called Joyce and sometimes called Joan. Could it be...murder? [Yes, it's always murder. Don't ask what I've done with Joyce of Midsommer Murders].

8. I found some regualr 5 hour energy at CVS for a crazy price, but I got some. I still think there's something fishy in the 5 hour energy department.

9. Two different neighbors are moving this weekend. It's sad. The rent is VERY HIGH and now we have to pay for water and sewer too and the amenities are none (the pool is under renovations). I get it. Two more years and Minisculus will be in middle school and I think we should look for a cheaper place. The boys' father wants to leave yesterday but the school is very good.

12 JUNE: Mechanics Day: Do you trust your auto mechanic?

No. I think they charge way too much. And sometimes they don't fix things. But I don't know of a better one so it's a case of the devil you know.

13 JUNE: Roller Coaster Day: Do you (or did you ever) enjoy riding roller coasters?

Not really. I don't mind if you're strapped in very tightly but I do like swings (and variation on swings) but the older I get the more scaredy cat I get.

14 JUNE: International Bath Day: Do you like baths?

I used to. But baths remind me of how fat I am. And I'd have to clean the boys' tub (our bathroom just has a shower stall) to use it and that's too much work. When I was last in a hotel I tried it (because I used to love it) and really I couldn't block out the shame of the fatness enough to relax and enjoy it. So, no. In theory, it sounds nice.

15 JUNE: Prune Day: Prunes. Yay or nay?

Yay. I got some recently and I feel better eat a few daily. I guess that means I'm old.

16 JUNE: World Sea Turtle Day: What’s your favorite ocean creature?

They are all nice but crabs are funny and jellyfish are pretty and manta rays are so elegant.

17 JUNE: World Crocodile Day: Have you ever seen a dangerous animal in the wild?

In Rwanda, a baboon jumped on my breakfast table and stole the jam.

18 JUNE: Wanna Get Away Day: Do you wanna get away?

PLEASE!

1. Last week of school here. Minor and Minisculus' last full day was today. They have 3 half days for the rest of the week.

2. I am (almost) halfway done with my Unconventional Courtship fic and it's due on Thursday *weeps in procrastination*

3. Yesterday, I thought of 2 solutions to a problem I have jogging, and I don't know why I didn't think of them before. This problem has plagued me for years. I don't know if anyone else has ever suddenly thought of something and you ask yourself 'why didn't I think of that years ago???'

I am in training for the bridge 10k in November.

4. Minisculus' team won on Saturday, and he scored! I am not going to the last game. It is Very Far Away (his father's taking him) so I was happy to end the season (for me) on a high note. Today is his last swimming lesson so by Saturday we will be done with spring sports.

5 JUNE: Hot Air Balloon Day: Have you ever been up in a hot air balloon? If not, would you like to?

Yes, sign me up!

6 JUNE: Eyewear Day: Would you ever wear pince-nez or a monocle?

Only if I slipped into an alternate universe where I went to Eaton and Balliol and solved crimes when I wasn't collecting first editions.

7 JUNE: Headache Awareness Week: What’s the best treatment for a headache?

Caffeine and a dark room.

8 JUNE: World Oceans Day: Do you get seasick?

If it's rough, yes, but I've never actually vomited.

9 JUNE: Corn on the Cob Day: Corn on the cob. Yay or nay?

YES! I love it.

10 JUNE: Ball Point Pen Day: What is your favorite writing instrument and why?

I like fine black ink Sharpie's. It bleeds, though so not appropriate. A sharp pencil is good, too. I like erasers.

11 JUNE: Making Life Beautiful Day: How you make another person’s life beautiful?

I don't know that I do, to be honest. Who thought up these questions?? I do like sending postcards to people.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. Nice things I've seen at the lake: turtles sunning themselves, baby geese, a purple butterfly. I am starting my 10k training. It's getting hotter so I have to go as early as I can.

2. I am trying to find a plot for my unconventional courtship fic. Please, plot bunny muse, don't abandon your supplicant in her time of need. I need a case which involves adultery, embezzlement and possibly murder! I am listening to Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely and The Big Sleep on audiobook and watching a host of old movies (really most of what my library had in the 'noir' category). Kiss Me Deadly a Mike Hammer with Cloris Leachman (!) didn't impress me. Nor did Dark Passage with Bogey and Bacall. But I am liking Out of the Past with Robert Mitchum. He's got some nice lines in it. I tried a Kurosawa called Dark Angel but it definitely wasn't what I wanted.

3. I feel like I am trying not to be so hard on myself about not hitting my goals (or maybe revising my goals so that they are more achievable). So I set a 'fine' 'good' and 'great' category for things so that if I do something even 3 times a week, (like yoga or not eating sweets or running) then I get a 'fine' and 4 is good (which is what I want--More Often Than Not) and 5 is great.

1 JUNE: Go Barefoot Day: Do you like going barefoot?

Yes. It isn't really safe but I like it. I like it at the beach.

2 JUNE: Rotisserie Chicken Day: When’s the last time you ate anything cooked on a spit or a grill?

We have a little George Foreman grill (which has seen better days) and I grilled hamburgers on it for Memorial Day.

3 JUNE: Egg Day: What’s the best way to prepare eggs?

Deviled (mu-hu-ha-ha!)

4 JUNE: Trails Day: Do you have a favorite hiking trail?

No. I've only gone to 2 recently. That impulse died but it might be revived in the autumn when things are cooler.

Of course, back in the day, When I Was Cool, I used to hike and hitchhike all over Chile and Argentina and Ecuador. Once I followed an old Jesuit trail by myself and got lost and had to sleep next to a horse. Once I got stuck in the mud and had to scream for help until a farm lad pulled me out. It's amazing I lived this long given all the potentially dangerous things that I did in my 20's. And I did almost all of them ALONE. I miss the person I was.

1. Poor Minisculus fell off a scooter at a friend's house and knocked his mouth. Luckily, all his teeth are still intact, but it was a harrowing experience. It bled A LOT. And he was in a lot of pain. I kept him home and took him to the dentist for xrays but everything looks okay and it will heal. Poor little dude. It could be worse because the brother of the boy he was visiting broke his leg in 2 places falling off a scooter and now he's in a cast up to his hip for the whole summer.

2. Memorial Day. Track is over! Minor got 2 PR's at the meet on Sunday so he ended his season well. He has one more week of soccer. Minisculus has 3 more weeks of soccer.

22 MAY: Maritime Day: When’s the last time you were on a boat or ship?

I can't remember. I like them, though!

23 MAY: Eat More Fruits & Vegetables Day: How do you try to eat more vegetables?

I try to eat one with dinner. I like spinach, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, celery. And I like tomatoes so when I have fried eggs for breakfast, I try to add a tomato. I can eat tomato on toast for lunch, too (with mayo!).

24 MAY: Scavenger Hunt and Treasure Hunt Day: When’s the last time you did a scavenger hunt? What’s your favorite treasure hunt story?

I haven't in a long time, but the library often has them in the children's section and you find signs with letters and fill out a code to spell out a saying and the desk gives you a sticker when you figure it out. I like treasure hunt films, The Goonies, Indiana Jones, etc.

25 MAY: Learn to Swim Day: How old were you when you learned to swim?

I still don't know how to do it properly. I just do an improvised dog paddle.

26 MAY: Paper Airplane Day: When’s the last time you folded a paper airplane?

The boys have periods where they really like doing them. One time I got them a proper kit for Xmas and made some with them. It's like balloons, the phases come and go.

27 MAY: Memorial Day: What in your life deserves a monument?

The number of times I don't strangle Minor for forgetting something.

28 MAY: Hamburger Day: What’s the best topping for a hamburger?

Mayonnaise & ketchup!
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. In their infinite fuckery, the building decided to shut off the electricity in the apartment for 9 hours (giving us much less than 24 hours' notice) so I was a vagabond today, going from the YMCA to Barnes & Noble to the public library. But now I am back at home. And the power's on! Yay! And none of our food seems to have spoiled. Double yay!

2. I am contemplating signing up for a 10k in November. This would go across the Bay Bridge (across the Chesapeake Bay) and it's the only of its kind (they close the bridge). Can I do it? It's twice the length I've done before. I am debating whether to sign Minor up with me. I think running across the bridge would be cool but I have to do it in 2 hours or they scoop me up in a wagon (shame, shame!).

3. I have had more than a few impulse buys lately. Mostly collage stuff. Hallowe'en washi tape I actually like! Those seashell stickers I wanted but they were out of them last time. When I start getting stuff, it leads to wanting MOAR! Capitalism is a disease, m'dudes.

4. Got a great book at the library: It came from the closet: queer reflections on horror [ed. Joe Vallese]. Each essay is on a specific horror film so I think that will be good to give me some ideas of things to watch for Hallowe'en.

5. My respect for Margery Allingham is growing (author of the Campion detective novels). She really does far-fetched plots very realistically. I'm listening to The Mind-Readers right now.

6. I was looking at tarot card decks at Barnes and Noble and there were FOUR entire shelves of them (!!!). I was overwhelmed. I didn't have the focus to look at even half of them. Fannishly, I noted: Good Omens, Jane Austen, Marvel, Edgar Allan Poe, The Nightmare Before Xmas. There were at least 4 color-your-own designs. Really, I had to walk away and I'll come back with a plan for deciding.

Let's finish May strong, okapi, go, go, go!

15 MAY: Chocolate Chip Day: What’s the best recipe you know of with chocolate chips?

I like chocolate chips on almost anything (ice cream!). But the original tollhouse recipe is good.

16 MAY: BBQ Day: What’s the best kind of barbeque?

Where I am from (South Carolina, USA) this is a Thing. Like first of all 'barbeque' means 'pulled pork' and the kind of sauce we make it with is mustard-based but in North Carolina they have tomato/ketchup-based sauce and so the baby Jesus does not love them as much.

17 MAY: World Hypertension Day: What gets your blood pressure up? Of late, the boys have been pushing my buttons pretty regularly. Like last night Minor remembering an assignment but realizing he lost the instructions--at 9 pm.

18 MAY: International Museum Day: What’s your favorite museum? National Gallery of Art (DC) I absolutely would love to go to the British Museum and the V&A and of course the Sherlock Holmes museum if I ever make it Across the Pond. Any museum with Bellas Artes in the name is cool, too.

19 MAY: Take your Parents to the Playground Day: When’s the last time you and your parents (or you and your children or both) were at a playground?

It's been a while. Even Minisculus is too old.

20 MAY: World Bee Day: Have you ever been stung by a bee?

Not that I remember. We have a lot of stinging creatures (yellow jackets, wasps) A hornet got me once.

21 MAY: International Tea Day: What’s your favorite kind of tea and your favorite thing to eat with tea? Twinnings Ceylon Orange Pekoe. I like to have some kind of pastry with it. A scone or similar beast is best.

1. My birthday was very good. As was my whole week of rest from birthday to Mother's Day. Collage made of wrapping paper, card from my insurance agent, and stickers from [personal profile] misbegotten. I got the glass door cleaned for my birthday and my car vacuumed for Mother's Day. I received from wonderful friends lovely collage papers, a great Poirot puzzle, chocolate (already consumed), bookmarks, lovely cards and gift cards and well wishes. And a fancy ergonomic pillow from my sister.

2. I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. Going to do some spring cleaning but allergies/sinus stuff is plaguing me at the moment. Also, I got into a fender bender at the church where Minor had a choral concert last night, no injuries, just scraping, but did put a bump in my evening and made me feel less like a functioning adult.

3. Have finished 2 more squares for book bingo (almost a third) and started a Poirot puzzle and posted every day for 3 Weeks for Dreamwidth.

4. I voted by mail in today's state election. It wasn't much because it's primaries and I'm an Independent, but I really wish Trump was in prison--for any crime. I would prefer sex crimes but I will take tax or financial fraud. Anything. Parking tickets.

QUESTIONS

7 MAY: Cosmopolitan Day: What’s your favorite cocktail?

Soco & lime. That's Southern Comfort and Rosa's Lime.

9 MAY: Sleepover Day: Did you go to or host sleepovers as a child?

I went to some as a child in elementary school. They were interesting...we really didn't have much supervision back in the day.

10 MAY: Clean Your Room Day: What’s the best part of cleaning a room?11 MAY: Train Day: Do you like traveling by train?

I would love to travel by train. Alas, the US doesn't present many possibilities. I used to take the train from New Orleans to Jackson, Mississippi when I was younger.

12 MAY: Limerick Day: Do you know any funny poems?

There once was a runner named Dwight,
Who could speed even faster than light.
He set out one day,
In a relative way,
And returned on the previous night.

13 MAY: Hummus Day: What’s the best way to eat hummus?

With pita! Homemade hummus is yummy.

14 MAY: Cannes Film Festival: What’s your favorite international film?

Nine Queens a 2000 Argentine heist film.

1. Snakes alive! I have been training for my race next month and on Monday it was warm enough for me to see 2 snakes at the little park where I run so I think spring has sprung.

2. I went with the boys and their father to a professional soccer game (DC United) in DC on Saturday night and Minisculus and his teammates got to go out on the pitch. The boys LOVED it. They loved the whole experience. It was anxiety-provoking for me: driving to DC, managing the parking garage, finding the seats, sitting through it all, buying $100 worth of food!! Someone got disgusted and threw his beer so it rained down on us. There was a lot of swearing. The boys had a blast. I realize I have some vertigo. Climbing up to our seats was okay, but climbing down was harrowing. I used the rail like I was drunk. It was very steep, and the steps were small.

3. Minor turns 13 on Sunday! I'm taking him and a friend (and Minisculus) to an arcade. He wants a bike, which are not cheap, eh? He did better at his track meet this past weekend.

4. I've been re-listening to the Gervase Fen books by Edmund Crispin in order. And listening to Dead Man's Folly. And reading How to be a Poet by Jo Bell.

10 APR: Siblings Day: How is/was your relationship with your sibling(s)?

Much better as adults than as children. I don't really remember my sister much growing up. No animosity, but I just don't think she played a significant part in my early life. She's five years older. And I've cut myself off from the rest of our extended family because of Trump but I still talk to her. We talk every week, which is a big deal. And she may even come to visit next year.

12 APR: Licorice Day: Are the black jellybeans the only ones you don’t eat?

Yes!

14 APR: Gardening Day: If you garden, what’s your favorite part of gardening? If you don’t, what would your ideal garden look like?

Gardening would be nice in theory. I've never had one. I'd want it all--vegetables and flowers, paths, a koi pond, swings, everything.

16 APR: Orchid Day: What kind of flower(s) have a special significance to you? My sister grows orchids. When we were very small, our grandfather had rose bushes for each of the grandchildren and mine was a pale purple. My sister's was an orange one which was very fragrant.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
It was a difficult weekend as Minor's soccer team lost 0 to 8, Minisculus soccer team lost 6 to 12 and Minor finished last in his two heats at his track meet (400 m and 200 m). I am singularly unequipped to deal with athletic disappointments. I never played sports or team sports as a child and I have difficulty enough dealing with my own disappointments. I just don't know what to say. I don't know how to help them do better and I do feel a tiny bit frustration because we are paying hundreds (in Minisculus case thousands) of dollars for them to play these sports. I bought Minor some track shoes and had to have a cold compress put to my forehead when I saw the price tag. !!! We sat in FREEZING conditions to watch Minor lose Friday night, drove 90 minutes away to watch Minsculus lose on Saturday and another hour to watch Minor not run as fast as his peers on Sunday. A lot of driving and dealing with the elements and parking in odd places. Sigh. And we will do most of it again this coming weekend. Sigh.

But--it's getting warmer! Yay, spring!

3 APR: Bookmobile Day: Have you ever seen a bookmobile?

I have very fond memories of the bookmobile as a child. It parked not far from my aunt's house and it was COLD in the very, very hot summer in South Carolina.

4 APR: Vitamin C Day: What’s your favorite citrus fruit?

I like most citrus and most citrus flavors. In drinks I use lemon power a lot. I eat clementines almost every day. I have only had grapefruit once but it was really good. It was cut in half and sugared and grilled (at a B&B in Oregon a long, long time ago). I have never enjoyed it in any other setting and I tried to replicate it at home and it didn't work.

5 APR: Read a Road Map Day: When’s the last time you read a paper map (real or literary)?

I love maps and floorplans in mystery novels. I have a map of Agatha Christie places. I always print out a paper map when we go hiking.

6 APR: Tartan Day: Is tartan stylish? [a Good Omens reference]

Yes! Aziraphale says so.

7 APR: Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Rwandan Genocide: Do you believe there can be true peace and/or true reconciliation after civil war or another significant national crisis?

The boys' father is Rwandan and survived the genocide. I was in Rwanda at the tenth anniversary of the genocide and I have a lot of doubts about true peace and true reconciliation at a societal level. Individually, I am more hopeful.

8 APR: Draw a Bird Day: In your opinion, what species of bird is easiest to draw? Most of mine look like a cross between a chicken and sparrow.

9 APR: Cherish an Antique Day: What’s the oldest object you own that you cherish? I have a little silver plate I like from my childhood. I do have an embroidery my grandmother did of my birth date and weight but I have complicated memories of my grandmother so I can't say I cherish it. But I've kept it.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
We had a lot of rain this morning. I'm on my third pair of dry socks!

Questions from This List

27 Mar: World Theatre Day: When’s the last time you saw a play?

I can't remember. I don't even think the kids have been in plays. I took them to a puppet show of Peter and the Wolf when they were tiny.

28 Mar: Barnum & Bailey Day: Ever been to the circus?

I saw O by Cirque de Soleil in Las Vegas once. It was amazing.

29 Mar: Mom & Pop Business Owners’ Day: Do you frequent a family-owned business?

No. Not on principle, but just there aren't any. I buy food at Giant and household goods at Target and pizza at a pizza chain (Vocelli's). There's a 7-11 and a Jersey Mike's (sub sandwiches) in walking distance. I go to Barnes & Noble and Michael's crafts and (occasionally) Safeway. And Kohl's. The only local business I used to support was a Chinese restaurant but it shut down.

30 Mar: International Laundry Folding Day: What’s the most tedious household chore you do on a regular basis?

Cleaning pee off a toilet I don't use! Keeping my car clean!

31 Mar: Easter: Have you ever hunted for (or hid) Easter eggs?

I have continuous plastic egg hunts for the boys during the week (or sometimes month) before Easter with prizes. This is in lieu of an Easter basket on Easter.

APRIL

1 APR: April Fool’s jokes. Yay or nay?

Nay! There are very few pranks that are funny but don't cause excess mess to clean up.

2 APR: Ferret Day: What’s your favorite mustelid?

[personal profile] smallhobbit's OC The Ferret, of course!
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. Minisculus asked for a rainbow cake so thanks to [personal profile] debriswoman who found a Youtube video for me I was able to make these:

2. My baby boy is 9. Time flies.

3. Day 2 of Spring Break. Tomorrow I will shift into Easter mode.

4. It's still chilly here.

5. Awful disaster of a ship hitting a bridge in Baltimore this morning. Just horrific. It was at 1 am so it could have been worse but still I hope the search and rescue was fruitful.

6. I am reading to/listening to an awful lot of books. Just finished Shards of Honor (thank you [personal profile] garonne) and the next in the Matthew Venn series is cued up.

Questions. Full list is here.

20 Mar: Bed-in for Peace: When’s the last time you slept late/had a lie-in?
With kids, it's tough. You're required to feed them :) I can't remember. It seems like I wake up at a different time every day, anywhere from 5:30 to 8:00 am depending on what's going on.

21 Mar: World Puppetry Day: Puppets. Creepy or cool?

I love puppets. I think they're cool

22 Mar: International Day of the Seal: If you could be a selkie for a day, what would you do?

Swim! I could snorkel without the snorkel. Maybe explore some shipwrecks, too.

23 Mar: Puppy Day: What’s the cutest breed of puppy?

I think retrievers are pretty cute. I like a bigger dog (theoretically, practically speaking no dog of any age is cute enough to warrant the amount of work required).

24 Mar: Palm Sunday: Ever ridden a donkey? What’s the strangest thing you’ve done to pass time during a really long religious service?

Palm Sunday is the day of the never-ending Gospel at the Church I No Longer Attend. I can't remember riding a donkey. Horses, yes, but not donkeys.

25 Mar: Physicians Week: Who’s your favorite doctor (fictional or real)?

Doctor Watson, of course! There's also Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman.

26 Mar: Live Long and Prosper Day: Favorite Star Trek iteration or episode or character. I'll have to go old school. I have to say my favorite space travelers are the Muppet's Pigs in SPAAACE.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
I don't have much to say since I unloaded at the end of last week. I polished off the Bailey's cake. We are still working on the Saint Patrick's Day coffee (which is still good). Edited to add: I finally watched "The Secret of the Kells" (animated Irish movie). It was good!

I am starting my training for the 5k again. I am doing better with the intermittent fasting this week.

It's very sunny but still cold here. Like a ran around the lake with a scarf on and wasn't uncomfortable until the last tiny bit. The wind is really strong. I am back to wearing my winter coat to wave at Minisculus at the bus stop.

I organized all my collage materials today. It was good. At one point, the bed was covered in piles whose logic is known only to me!

Minor had his first track practice. Seemed to go ok. Except cold and windy. Minisculus' team made it to the finals of the soccer tournament this weekend, then lost. He played goalie in one part of one of the games and made 5 saves!

Also, we stopped to eat dinner at a restaurant and I realized I've not been inside a restaurant in 10 months (since my birthday dinner). It was weird!

14 Mar: Save a Spider Day: Spiders. Save them or squash them?

Save them! Unless they are very small in which case I vacuum them up.

15 Mar: Ides of March: Ever been stabbed in the back?

Two times where I perceived it as a betrayal, but it was actually a health care professional doing their job. I understand why they did what they did, but the scar is still there.

16 Mar: Quilting Day: Do you quilt? Or own a quilt someone made you?

[personal profile] debriswoman made me a very lovely quilt coaster which I use every day and a quilt bag.

17 Mar: St. Patrick’s Day: What’s Ireland’s most famous gift to the world?

Bailey's and Jameson

18 Mar: Global Recycling Day: How much recycling do you do?

Not as much as I should.

19 Mar: Vernal Equinox: How do you celebrate the arrival of spring?

Allergy medicine! Ha!
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
This is Mr. Peeps.

I bought rescued him from the craft store yesterday. He was the last pink one in the bin!

I bought assorted craft kits for spring break/Easter. Some fairy lights.

Questions

29 Feb: International Toast Day: What’s the best thing to put on toast? What is the best kind of bread to toast? I like toast a lot. With coffee or tea or juice. I like it with jam or butter or peanut butter or avocado or sandwiches made of toast like BLT or fried egg and tomato.

3 Mar: World Wildlife Day: When’s the last time you were out in nature? On Sunday morning, the boys and their father and I went on a family hike (I know, but yes). 3 hours. Waterfalls and getting lost and Minor always ends up so so so dirty and wet.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. On Sunday morning, I drove an hour and took the boys on a hike. And they liked it! Go Mom!

2. The boys' father has returned.

3. This morning, I finished a book I've been reading for 9 weeks so that felt good. I finished listening to A Pocketful of Rye by Agatha Christie yesterday.

4. Still working on my Year of the Dragon fic.

Questions for 21-27 February

21 Feb: World Kombucha Day: Have you ever tried kombucha? Favorite flavors?

I just tried it for the first time a few minutes ago [because of this question]. It took me a long time to sort through the shelf and find a flavor that sounded appealing. I settled on GT's Synergy Lemonberry and Health Ade Mango Lemonade. Neither taste very good to me. I put this in because Jungkook of BTS once scolded ARMYs for buying out his favourite brand and flavor [which he drank on his live broadcasts] so he couldn't find it.

22 Feb: Supermarket Employee Day: Do you have a favorite worker at the place where you buy food? After my husband and kids, the adults I see most are Kelli and Jeff, the cashiers at my supermarket. They are both amazing people and I consider them part of my support system even thought I only see them for a few minutes on Wednesdays.

23 Feb: Dog Biscuit Day: Ever eat a dog biscuit by mistake? Or on purpose?! No. No pets, no dogs ever. I do see sometimes frozen treats for dogs in the freezer aisle and don't wonder that sometimes they get mixed up.

24 Feb: Tortilla Chip Day: What’s the best thing to eat tortilla chips with: salsa, guacamole, bean dip, tequila? I love chips any way. Salsa is best but guacamole or dips are good too.

25 Feb: Telecommuter Appreciation Week (Feb 25-Mar 2]: What are the pros and cons of working from home? As I stay at home mom, I never have the option of going into the office :(

26 Feb: Levi Strauss: Do you have a favorite pair of jeans? Yes, but I rarely wear jeans because I am usually exercising at some point in my day so I just wear yoga pants or sweat pants or cargo pants.

27 Feb: International Polar Bear Day: If you saw a polar bear in the wild, what would you do? Ha. My sons have a saying: if black, fight back, if brown, lay down, if white, say 'good night.'
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. I'm trying not to spiral about my weight. The scale is Not Moving At All but I have been using my intermittent fasting app faithfully as well as Lose It! for food logging.

2. I started a cross stitch for Minor's birthday. It's the Sanskrit letter for OM (his mantram). Of course, Minisculus saw me doing it and now he wants one for his birthday (he picked out an ice cream cone!)

3. The boys' father is still gone. I haven't gotten what I wanted to get done while he was gone, and I feel like the clock is running out. I am debating whether to 'cut bait' or to buckle down and try to Get It All Done. He returns next Monday evening.

4. I want to do a fic for Year of the Dragon [I've checked out a total of 4 books on it at my online library but find it very frustrating. It's all about the personality of each sign and not enough about what happens in the Year of X and the latter is what I want. I want inspiration for what the Year of the Dragon means not compatibility of the different signs and what each's favorite colour is, etc.] and at least a ficlet for jhope's birthday (Everything is Murder edition). I also want to write a poem with a circle theme.

5. I ended up ordering some Saint Patrick's coffee from the Catholic Coffee Company. I also ordered some Saint Nicholas and some Saint Drogo (who, apparently, is the Patron Saint of Coffee). The last is an Ethiopian blend and I'm not certain I've ever tried that.

6. But I did finish my Venom fic. So yay. I'm only 2 holidays behind. And I've hit my word goal for February so any words now are just going toward the debt from January. And I like My Plain Jane.

Questions Feb 14-20

14 Feb: Valentine’s Day: Do you remember your first Valentine?

Yes. This comes for one of my earliest memories of being 5 and standing on the steps of my grandmother's house [I lived with my grandmother for a portion of my childhood] and a boy from my kindergarten class jumping out of his mom's car and running up and giving me a small box of chocolates and running back.

15 Feb: Gum Drop Day: What’s your favorite sticky or chewy candy? Gummy bears! I also like something called Bit o' Honey which is like maple chewy squares.

16 Feb: Almond Day: What is your favorite nut? I like cashews and walnuts.

17 Feb: World Pangolin Day: What’s your favorite unusual creature? Okapis, of course. I like pangolin, too. And anteaters. And platypuses.

18 Feb: Hate Florida Day: What has Florida Man ever done to you?! For those not familiar, people from Florida have a reputation for getting into headlines like 'Florida man charged with throwing live alligator into fast food restaurant.' My sister used to own a veterinary clinic in Tallahassee (Florida) and she once had a drunk/high/homeless person break into her clinic and fall sleep/pass out in one of the kennels.

19 Feb: Chocolate Mint Day: What’s the best pairing with chocolate? I think nuts. Or coffee. Or coffee and nuts. Anything like 'java chip.'

20 Feb: Hockey is for Everyone Day: Is hockey for everyone? Nope. Not for me. More for you.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. We had steady flurries for a couple of hours today so school was delayed by 2 hours.

2. I watched two versions of the film My Bloody Valentine (1981 & 2014). I like the older one better. I may or may not be able to crank a Venom ficlet out by Thursday inspired by it.

3. Has anyone ever tried a holiday coffee blend that was not Xmas? I was looking around and I see St. Patrick's Irish coffee and some Easter ones but they all sound kind of Fruity! [meaning strange and artificially flavored and probably not a good value for experimenting]. There is Bones Coffee Company and a couple of others.

Questions of the Week

7 Feb: Girl & Women in Sports Day: Do you follow any women’s sports? If you were a girl, did you play sports as a child?

No. I know South Korea has a good archer because the BTS boys watched her win a competition In the Soop (their vacation program) a couple of years ago. BUT I am happy to say that my boys and their father watched the Women's World Cup with just as much enthusiasm as the men's.

8 Feb: Wear Orange Day: Is orange the new pink? [from the film Legally Blonde]

I like orange. I like pink. I have to say the greatest benefit of bright orange is picking out My Kid in a crowd so I sometimes insist on it when we go to fairs and things like that.

9 Feb: Read in the Tub Day: Do you read in the bathtub? Ever dropped a book in the tub?

No. I don't take baths. I am too lazy to clean the tub first and it would be snug fit these days and I have issues with looking at my own body but once in a while when I'm in a hotel with a bigger tub, I will take a bath and read (to avoid looking at myself). I try not to drop the book in the tub (especially if it's a library book) but it happens enough.

10 Feb: Lunar New Year: Do you celebrate lunar new year? What do you hope the year of the Dragon will bring to your life?

I don't celebrate it but Target had some cute decorations, so I got some and hung them up and we had Chinese on Saturday night. I am hoping to do spread with them and with a little envelope Minisculus brought home from school.

[community profile] story_works has a Year of the Dragon challenge going on, fyi. I welcome anyone with links to resources that might help me find inspiration!

11 Feb: Superbowl Sunday: Do you know anything about American football? Do you have a favorite team?

Everyone likes the Ravens here, but I don't follow American football. Growing up in the South it was college (meaning university) football. And it was a Big Deal in my family that my sister went to undergraduate studies at Clemson University rather than the University of South Carolina (where my parents and aunts and uncles went). Looking back, it seems like a ludicrous controversy.

12 Feb: Darwin Day: Do you believe in survival of the fittest?

No. I believe in compassion. But [personal profile] firecat has recced a book called The Panda's Thumb that I might check out.

13 Feb: Fat Tuesday: Have you ever celebrated Mardi Gras/Carnival?

I have! I lived in New Orleans for a couple of years and in Bolivia for a couple of years so I have had different carnival/Mardi Gras experiences.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. The boys' father is leaving on Saturday for 2 weeks so I'm getting ready for that.

2. My car has had all kinds of expensive problems this week, and the flashing maintenance light is still on. Sigh.

3. I'm working on Valentines. The international ones have gone out, and I am about half way done with the domestic ones. It's fun.

365 Questions for 2024 [Feb 1-6]

1 Feb: International Face & Body Art Day: Do you have tattoos? What’s the most memorable tattoo you’ve seen on someone else?

I am open to a tattoo in theory but I have nothing that I feel strongly enough about to put on myself permanently.

TMI: I have this little Golden Girls soap opera I play in my head before I go to bed and in it, my first girl friend wants to put a tattoo on me and so we do it (some kind of symbol on my upper arm) then a few years later my second girl friend (girl friend/girlfriend depending on the mood, mostly the former) wants to add some kind of flower or vine to it. The second part is one of the episodes in Okapi's Cinema of the Mind. My friends all come to the tattoo shop and we make a big party of it.

The most memorable tattoo I've ever seen is a large sea-green sea snake on an older white/gringa lady's arm when I was living in Ecuador. It really didn't look that great to me, and I always think of it when I think of myself having a tattoo and decide that that ship has sailed in reality (not in bedtime fantasy, see above). I respect her decision to have it and support anyone who wants one at any age, but I just thought it probably looked cool Back in the Day and then at the age she was it just looked kind of ridiculous (to me, just my opinion, like I said, I respect her decision to do it and know my attitude is probably a minority one).

2 Feb: Crepe Day: What’s the best filling and/or topping for crepes? Sweet or savory?

Also in Ecuador, there was a crepe shop and I learned the delights of savory crepes. In the US, they are almost always chocolate and/or jam.

3 Feb: Feed the Birds Day: Do you have a bird feeder? Do you or do you remember feeding ducks?

I used to have a birdfeeder on the balcony (apartment living we aren't allowed to hang anything so it just sat on the ground) during the pandemic, but I gave it up because it was too much mess. Once in a while, a pigeon comes back and glares at me through the sliding door.

I don't ever remember feeding ducks. Feeding ducks makes me think of Good Omens.

4 Feb: I Heart Horror Day: If you heart horror, what is your favorite horror story (film, literature, true crime, etc.)?

I do heart horror. I like all kinds. My favorite is a Korean film from 2014 called Hide and Seek. It always scares me.

5 Feb: World Nutella Day: Nutella, yay or nay?

Nay. Minor is alllergic to tree nuts so we don't have nutella in the house.

6 Feb: International Frozen Yogurt: What’s your favorite topping on frozen yogurt?

So there is a frozen yogurt place that routinely has fundraisers for the boys' schools so we go fairly often to Yogi Castle. It's a self serve, pay by the weight, and I like vanilla with chocolate chips, nuts, cookie dough bites, little peanut butter chocolate turtles. The boys get something very child-appropriate like cotton candy flavor with lots and lots and lots of gummy worms.
stonepicnicking_okapi: ChopSuey (chopsuey)
1. We got 4 inches last night! School was cancelled for the boys today and tomorrow! They had a lot of fun.
I've nowhere to go and nothing to do so I enjoyed it (and cracked open a jigsaw puzzle because snow is definitely puzzling weather). I REALLY hate ice and it won't get above freezing all week so I will probably be inside. I did a 17 year old aerobics video with Denise Austin for cardio today. She actually said 'jazz hands' unironically.

2. I watched Cape Fear with Robert de Niro for the first time. It was too violent and sexually violent and protracted for me, but my sister lives in that area and belongs to the Cape Fear Orchid Society and I thought it might be a good prompt for a fic. Maybe even a Nero Wolf one?

3. It's been an up and down couple of weeks. I have done Yoga with Adriene every other day so far this month. Yay. I just did a really unnecessary impulse buy of collage materials. Boo. I accidentally shredded my checkbook and didn't realize it until rent was due. Boo. I went into the bank (I haven't been inside a bank in YEARS and got a cashier's check and saved the day before I got penalized). I've already finished one book for the Bingo. Yay. Working on a cross stitch too.

4. My sister cleaned out her shoe closet and sent me a giant box of shoes and I'd say 80% of them fit. I don't have or need a lot of shoes but it will be interesting to see if I use them. She also sent about half a dozen used pairs of very woolly socks (which she bought when she lived in Colorado) and the entire family was wearing them last night.
