Does your library do this?

I picked this up today. All I knew was it was a 'sea adventure' and one of [personal profile] garonne's squares is 'set at sea.' I did not take into account that the display was on the edge of the Young Adult section. It is a YA book.

Also, is the term 'blind date' not used anymore? Is it offensive to blind people?

What the book was in the cut...

This is the last post about mi laberinto for a few weeks. I did the 24 paintings (cutting out the pictures and gluing the pictures to the frames and gluing the stand to the back of 2) and the flowers [cutting and rolling paper around the stamens, rolling leaves round the flowers, tying the bouquets (3) and fitting the other flowers in the 2 vases.] All of these were very tiny. There are a few additions (decorations to be glued to shelves and things, like maps, to be laid about), but nothing else requires putting together except the room itself.

I finished all the books for my miniature library (mi laberinto). This includes types 3 and 4 books which where covers glued around pieces of balsam wood (1 piece for type 3, two pieces glued together for type 4). So, in total, I've made 107 books for the library. Tomorrow, I am going to work on the paintings (15 in total) and 2 vases with flowers. And then I'm going to wait 3 weeks until the boys' father returns from overseas to proceed to putting together the actual room (walls, floors, ceiling, and, yes, lighting).

I’ve done some furnishings for mi laberinto (the mini library). These are all made of paper: a tiny suitcase (the stickers, six total, had to be cut out and glued on the suitcase, also the handle to the suitcase had to be cut out and glued separately) and 10 tiny boxes (folded and glued). (photo 1)

The real mystery of this library is the books. There are 4 kinds. I’ve been working on the first two.

Most of the books are entitled ‘book,’ which gives the whole project a surrealist edge to it (thus, the Borges nickname).

First type of book. 10 of the books have pages that you fold accordion-style and glue to the cover. (photo 2) But the pages are the same for 4 of the 10 (cupcakes). There are also musical scores (2), some kind of plant journal/text (2), maps (2) and some kind of old architectural/engineering text.

No one needs 4 books about cupcakes, so I’ve decided to flip the interior inside out and write quotes I like from literature on some of them. One will be from One Hundred Years of Solitude, one will be from Sherlock Holmes (ACD). One will be from Agatha Christie (Miss Marple). I don’t know about the other last. “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” or “Carmilla” or maybe a Borges short story. For non-US folks, a quarter (the coin) is 2.5 cm in diameter.

Anyway, the second type of book is not a book at all but a paper box of spines (photo 3) with one side open. And there are 45 of these to do total!

So, so far, strange books and fake books.

I received the DIY Miniature Models Kit: Harper's Library for Christmas.

For reasons I'll explain later, I've nicknamed it 'mi laberinto' (my labyrinth) after the collection of short stories by Jorge Luis Borges called Labyrinths.

I've developed a great appreciation for carpenters and upholsterers. Here are most of the furniture. My original photos (sent to my sister) used a bottle of 5 hour energy but I realized most of the people looking at this won't know how tall a bottle of 5 hour energy is, so I found the most internationally-recognizable thing in the house as reference.

The chair looks very shabby, but it's the best I could do. I am using tacky glue. The drawers and doors on the cabinets don't work. They're just for show. But I did have to make the handles and the fixtures for the handles. And, of course, put all the shelves and sides and legs together. I made the little basket and lined it with the green fabric and rolled the little rolls of paper (they must be wrapping paper because I'm too poor to ever own a house, so wallpaper is out of the question, unless, you know, it's like the Yellow Wallpaper and trying to drive me mad).
