I am moving on to poems featured in Eat This Poem: A Literary Feast of Recipes Inspired by Poetry by Nicole Gulotta. Almost all of the recipes are far, far too sophisticated for my palate, but I am going to try to make the Earl Grey shortbread in the afternoon and post tomorrow. The second one I think is continuing in one of the themes appearing this month 'poems about poetry.'

While Eating a Pear by Billy Collins

After we have finished here,

the world will continue its quiet turning,

and the years will still transpire,

but now without their numbers,

and the days and months will pass

without the names of Norse and Roman gods.

How to Eat a Poem by Eve Merriam

Don't be polite.
Bite in.
Pick it up with your fingers and lick the juice that
may run down your chin.
It is ready and ripe now, whenever you are.

You do not need a knife or fork or spoon
or plate or napkin or tablecloth.

For there is no core
or stem
or rind
or pit
or seed
or skin
to throw away.

Today by Billy Collins

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary's cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.

I do so like poems that reference other art works, and I do like the work of Edward Hopper. About six months ago, while cleaning, I found a book of Edward Hopper art postcards that I bought at some point. Really lovely. But it did not include this one, Evening Wind, which is NSFW and therefore under the cut.

This is only to remind me that the title of a poem need not be an afterthought. It can be integral, novel, and even the best part of a poem. This is "And It's Raining Outside, Which Always Adds" by Billy Collins from Whale Day and Other Poems [2020].

This is also from Whale Day and Other Poems by Billy Collins. I have at several points considered massage therapy as a possible career, and I am struck by the similarity between this and the massage poem by Margaret Atwood.

I do like it when poets reference other pieces of art. So here is Billy Collins referencing John Coltrane in "Air Sax" which is from Whale Day and Other Poems [2020].

I finished Whale Day and Other Poems by Billy Collins and have about 6 or so that I want to post. Here is the first and shortest, Irish Spider. Reminds me of Moriarty.

I am reading Whale Day and Other Poems by Billy Collins. Here's the first poem in the book.
