I am content today because I posted 2 fics for the Spook Me Ficathon, a BTS zombie Omegaverse fusion with the Korean zombie film Train to Busan and a Lovecraft Cthulhu/historical one about the disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from the Flannan Isle, Scotland in 1900. So I've made my word count goal for the month and I'm back on track to meet my year-end goal. A nice feeling.

I am a fan of Andrew Wyeth's paintings. I bought a kitchen refrigerator magnet of "Wind from the Sea" when I was down in DC. Here's one I always associate with Halloween: "Perpetual Care."

The last two items which caught my attention from my visit to the National Gallery of Art.

Fumee d'ambre gris by Singer Sargent [Probably because I like the scent of amber gris very much]

I also like the sculptures of Alberto Giacometti.

Perhaps I am influenced by all the jigsaw puzzles I do, but these reminded me of jigsaw puzzles. They were on opposite walls of the same room and I sat on a sofa in between and fantasized for an unnatural amount of time about being a Bohemian artist commissioned to paint a five-panel work of a section of a romantic city (Paris) for a wealthy client (like the second one). I understand a lot of people have soap operas/dramas going on in their heads like I do.

I was all about colour on my recent visit to the National Gallery of Art. Here are two I enjoyed.

Last weekend, I got to spend 7 whole hours by myself at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Because the boys were with their father, I didn't even have to make sure my phone was on Just In Case. I can't tell you how nice that was.

I am going to share some of my favourite works this week. I went to the East (modern) and West (older) wings and the Sculpture Garden and I also crossed to the Hirshorn (modern).

My most favourite was The Little Dancer by Degas. It is in a room with a lot of other sculptures by Degas and Rodin. I went back there at the end just to look at it again (and the other works. I like Rodin a lot, too). In an alternate universe I would like to be a sculptor. I like looking and seeing the artist's fingers and hands pressed into the materials (or evidence of their hands, similarly I like looking at paintings very close and seeing the brush strokes).

I have a cross-stitch pattern book of famous works of art and this is the first time in about 20 years I've done a cross-stitch to keep myself (not to give as a gift). This is Kandinsky's Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles.

Stickers!

I ordered some art stickers from a shop on Etsy for collage journalling. These are all small (about 5-7 cm square). The freebies are Artemisia Gentileschi (thank you [personal profile] dr_zook!).

A little bit about her:

Artemisia Lomi or Artemisia Gentileschi (US: /ˌdʒɛntiˈlɛski/,[1][2] Italian: [arteˈmiːzja dʒentiˈleski]; 8 July 1593 – c. 1656) was an Italian Baroque painter. Gentileschi is considered among the most accomplished seventeenth-century artists, initially working in the style of Caravaggio. She was producing professional work by the age of fifteen.[3] In an era when women had few opportunities to pursue artistic training or work as professional artists, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence and she had an international clientele.

The ones I ordered are under the cut: Kandinsky; Alexandre Alexeieff; Rothko; Bosch; and Julie de Graag.

I recently finished Hokusai's Landscapes, a coffee table book, with lots of wonderful works by Hokusai, the most famous (I think?) Japanese artist in the West. Best known for The Great Wave off Kanagawa, which I actually have as a cross stitch pattern in my little cross stitch art book. He also did The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife, which should be inspiration to all of us tentacle smut-peddlers. I photocopied about 20 pages from the book for my inspiration collection and these two were among them.

In reading Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Curry, I discovered Joseph Cornell, an artist who made shadowboxes out of found objects. I find his work interesting. It appeals to the miniaturist as well as the poet. Wikipedia includes this quote about him. And links to haptic poetry from his page, which I like.

Somewhere in the city of New York there are four or five still-unknown objects that belong together. Once together they'll make a work of art. That's Cornell's premise, his metaphysics, and his religion...

If I ever go back to museums, I shall seek him out.

I like Edward Hopper, and when I was doing my Big Clean before the New Year, I found a book of postcards I'd bought somewhere. Here are some of my favourites. I love how he portrays solitude as well as loneliness. I like what he does with color, too. You'd think they'd be dull and grey but they aren't.
